PBS members revolt in Sabah east coast

The boycott together with the mass resignations dashed any hopes the party had of shaping politics in this east coast district.

LAHAD DATU: A Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) leadership purge in this east coast district is threatening to wipe out the party’s presence here altogether.

Representatives of 20 PBS branch leaders here this week announced that their branches would no longer cooperate with the party’s new divisional leadership due to partisanship that has edged them out of all decision-making roles.

The revolt led by PBS Kg Terusan branch chairman, Hamid Awang together with Kg Tabanak branch head, Madun Buyong, as well as Kg Timor and Kg Pancuran branch chairmen, Abd Kore Bima and Chu Yan Yang respectively comes just weeks after some 2,000 PBS members from here and Tungku publicly announced that they were joining PKR.

The boycott together with the mass resignations dashed any hopes the party had of having a bigger role in shaping politics in this east coast district.

The latest trouble for the party that is only second to Sabah Umno in the state BN hierarchy comes after the division’s new leadership headed by Murshid Mohd Rais and his deputy Lo Tian Song sidelined all those who contested against them in party elections.

Hamid said this was against the party’s spirit and reflected a desire for revenge by those who should be working to unite members now that the elections are over.

Furthermore, he claimed, the divisional elections were not fair as the representative from the central committee was not neutral and had covertly backed the eventual winners.

“They (the new divisional leaders) have also refused to issue any circulars related to party activities to all the branches and are limiting it to a few within their circle. This has caused chaos within the division,” he said.

“We don’t trust Murshid because he switched to SAPP when Yong Teck Lee was the Chief Minister and then switched to Umno when that party later came to power (took over the chief ministership).

“Now out of the blue this guy appears and contests in the division election. We refuse to have a leader who has no principles leading us as it will threaten the division’s future.

“It is the same with Lo Tian Song. He was appointed as councillor and development officer for many years already, but what has he done so far to help the people? Dam Road areas continue to face water and power shortage, deteriorating road conditions and the Chinese community there continues to face many problems,” Hamid claimed.

The four branch chairmen also want the party’s divisional leadership to explain how funds provided by Lahad Datu assemblyman Nasrun Mansur to upgrade the division’s office in preparing for the coming general election had been spent as the office remained in disrepair.

“Because of this we are unhappy. We will forward our letter with the signatures of 20 branch leaders to the central committee soon to express our dissatisfaction, and at the mean time we will continue to boycott this leadership until the central committee gives us a favourable answer to this matter,” Hamid said,

Early last month, more than 2,000 PBS member and leaders from here and Tungku led by Mohamad Din joined PKR during Anwar Ibrahim’s visit here. Din was the Lahad Datu assemblyman during the PBS era and was an ordinary party member before joining PKR.

    1. Seems like PBS calling more members to join them :

Five hundred and fifty Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) members from eight branches in Sook quit the party and joined the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) through Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS).

    3. Pairin also stated that PBS was always committed to its struggle for the people and at 27 years, PBS was more mature, playing a very important role in the political arena and the development of the state and country.

As the second largest party in the state, Pairin said PBS had contributed to BN’s victory in the last general election and PBS would also continue to support the BN government and contribute to the leadership of the country in terms of ideas, suggestions and cooperation in an effort to drive unity, peace, political stability and national development.

  3. PBS advised people of Sabah should be wise in evaluating the history and background of the head of the opposition pact, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who had made many promises which were never fulfilled.

  4. PBS reminded Anwar had not only failed to fulfill the 100 days to develop Sabah made previously, but also a 'two-faced' leader who was prepared to do anything merely to achieve his agenda to gain power.

    1. In a state notorious for political upheavals in the past, the relative calm prevailing over the last 10 years can also be attributed to Pairin’s unselfish act of bringing PBS back to the Barisan Nasional (BN) in 2002 after the party left the ruling coalition in acrimonious circumstances in 1990.

      Delete
    2. Pairin, now 72, virtually single-handedly stood up to the might of the BN whose then ruling Berjaya Party incurred the wrath of Sabah’s majority Kadazandusun community through a spate of unpopular actions in the mid-1980s.

    3. He quit Berjaya and formed PBS which, then barely a month old, toppled the Berjaya-led BN state government in the 1985 election.

    4. PBS came to power in a wave of popular support - and against all odds - perhaps unprecedented in the Malaysian political scene.

    5. Pairin was chief minister for nine years till the 1994 election which, although the PBS won for the fourth time in a row, saw Pairin having to quit in a huff after only two weeks into his administration following massive defections of elected state assemblymen from his party to the BN.

    6. “It is my hope that we give our undivided support to Pairin in Tambunan in the next election, just as we did in 1985,” he said.

    7. The PBS then became a formidable opposition that saw Sabah again embroiled in political instability but an act of political statesmanship ensued when the PBS that Pairin founded was accepted back into the BN fold in 2002.

    8. And two years later, in a magnanimous gesture, Pairin was made deputy chief minister, a post he holds till today.

    9. From a purely journalistic point of view, Pairin, who is a Huguan Siou (paramount leader) for the Kadazandusun Murut community, did a good job, particularly in the political arena.

    10. Former editor-in-chief of Bernama Datuk Seri Azman Ujang, who was a reporter in Sabah in those days of political upheavals, said no Sabah politician had made such a huge impact on the state quite like Pairin.

    11. Through those turbulent times, there have been many casualties and few survivors but some 36 years later, Pairin is still a political force to be reckoned with, he said.

    12. “He is both a leader and a political fighter, and a gentleman politician at that, playing the game according to the rules, thanks to his training as a lawyer. And PBS, being a major partner in the state government, is still as influential as always,” he said.

    13. Sabah veteran journalist Emin Madi said that Pairin, as president of a major state BN component party, plays a crucial role as a unifying factor as far as the Kadazandusun Murut community interest is concerned.

    14. He said that though PBS under Pairin has been quite vocal on certain issues concerning Sabah, including the need to set up a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to solve the illegal immigrants issue in Sabah, the party has never wavered in its support for the BN cause.

    15. In launching the 26th congress of PBS at the Hongkod Koisaan Hall, here, last year, Pairin, who has been vocal in highlighting the issue of illegal immigrants in Sabah since the formation of PBS about 27 years ago, had called for a final settlement of the illegal immigrants problem in Sabah, literally describing it as a “wound” in the 1Malaysia “body” that has to be “surgically” treated, and the PBS sought to have the RCI set up in 2012.

      Delete
    16. The suggestion was well received by the federal government and, on June 1, Najib announced the highly-anticipated RCI on the Sabah illegal immigrants issue and subsequently revealed the details of the panel’s composition and terms of reference on Aug 11. It has been given six months to complete its investigation on the matter in question.
