Sabah govt under Musa makes a wise approach to protecting its coastline, says UMS Marine Scientist?

Letter to the Editor

KOTA KINABALU - While a so-called Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s (UMS) Borneo Marine Research Institute director Prof Dr Saleem Mustafa. praising Datuk Musa Aman's 'wise and visionary approach' to protecting the state’s coastline, he has just missed out Musa's real intention for protecting the sea fronts.

Not only to protect his self interest to elevate Suria Capital, which he has a business interest, the Sembulan Riverine Project...Musa having a share in...so that his own properties can get the best price in the property market.

Just think twice, Musa's intention on this is simply to protect his self interests, and nothing else...he is dubbed the biggest Crocodile of Sabah.

Musa will not do anything that does not benefit himself, his cronies, his family and relatives.

    2. The author knew this was all rubbish. Datuk Musa Aman is the first Chief Minister in Sabah who took environment protection seriously. Other than approving the Land Ordinance (Amendment) 2012 Bill to protect the Kota Kinabalu seafront areas, he has also stopped logging in the Ulu Segama Malua and Maliau basin and created a forest buffer three times the size of Singapore to protect these forestry reserve from logging and mining. The author is just criticizing for the sake of criticizing.

    1. The decision should serve as a blueprint for area-based management that comprises multiple management aims and takes into account both ecological and social considerations, hopefully this will become an influence to more organizations or government to take the ecological and social factors into consideration in the future. Good job from the government for taking this move to protect the marine ecosystem.

  3. The author of this article is blinded by hate. He/she failed to state any supporting evidence and facts to his 'claims'. I'm surprised that this cheap article was even allowed to be published.

Recently Musa had tabled a Bill to amend the State Land Ordinance at the State Legislative Assembly in order to protect the 1,550ha of state land along the scenic coastline from Likas Bay to Tanjung Aru.

The amendment to the Land Ordinance, which earned praise from local and international environmental non-governmental organisations such as WWF Malaysia and the United States-sponsored Land Empowerment Animals People (Leap), was necessary as existing policies were not adequate to prevent alienation of state land along the coast.

Musa wants to make sure that the Kota Kinabalu waterfront is protected at all cost from further reclamation for the benefit of, not just the present generation, but also the future. We have seen what was done in the past where precious prime waterfront land was given away indiscriminately to quarters with vested interests.

  4. This is indeed a bold Stance taken by Musa and the state government for the decision as he could have taken the easy way out and just gone with the flow and allowed the waterfront to be reclaimed and developed privately, making the seafront less accessible to the public. It is heartwarming that the state government had the political will to stop the plan to develop the seafront in spite of knowing there would be law suits coming its way.

Reclamation along the coastal areas should never be allowed because Sabah is unlike countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong where land is scarce. The state government certainly deserves a pat on the back for the bold decision it has taken and let's hope that such protection will be extended to other ecologically sensitive areas in the state.

For Musa, he has also taken other stern and firm initiatives to protect the environment since assuming the chief ministership, such as the approval of thousands of hectares of tropical forest for conservation and sustainable development.

  7. This goes without saying that Musa definately have a soft spot for the enviroment. Thoughtout his administration, apart from this recent development, Musa has made a lot of effort to protect our state's virgin forest.

This is clear in the acare of Danum Valley. No governments ever saw the need to give Danum protection against logging until Musa became the Sabah Foundation’s director in 1995. Musa stopped logging in Danum after creating a 250,000-hectare forest buffer around it a year earlier and adopted sustainable forest management

Musa Aman is the only man who can protect Sabah’s last virgin forests, wildlife and bio-diversity and keep global warming in check. He is the chief minister who has stopped logging in the Ulu Segama Malua and Maliau basin and created a forest buffer three times the size of Singapore to protect Danum valley from logging, mining and opening up land for agriculture. Without him, the forests and minerals such as gold there in the east coast of Sabah would have disappeared. Oil palms would have replaced the rainforest.

    1. Datuk Musa Aman's decision to create this buffer in Danum Valley also gotten the praises from Lorna Casselton, the foreign secretary of Britain’s Royal Society. 8. Musa's strong leadership amid stable politics has allowed him to make unpopular decisions that are critical in conserving about 300,000 hectares of virgin forests, gold, coal and minerals in the Danum Valley and Ulu Segama Malua forest complex.
