SAPP Youth Exco Clement Lee was replying to the proposal made by Assistant Finance Minister Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan who proposed that the local government make it compulsory for developers of new housing projects to set aside an area to build mosque supported by PAS Sabah (“PAS to builders: don’t just think about Profits” published on 9 October 2012 at Daily Express).
"In Sabah, the allocation of the sites for mosques/suraus would be suitable for predominantly Muslim areas, like near existing kampongs (eg. Sembulan, Petagas). The new Putatan development with a huge Muslim population is a case in point," Clement pointed out.
He said the Muslims at KingFisher Park go to the surau at Kg. Bangka Bangka which is nearby and to the Mosque at UMS and the City Mosque in Likas.
"It would be unwise to demand that all new housing development areas must have a surau/mosque irrespective of the locality and population composition. Being a market driven and since housing estates are developed by the private sector, it is obvious that the location of religious sites will have to suit the nature of the development.
"I noted the uneasiness among Penampang people who heard that mosques will be built in the midst of a non-Muslim population. As a responsible government, the government must respect the wishes of the local community and at the same time, provide for religious facilities within a reasonable distance.
