A political pressure group in Sabah has taken to task local oposition leaders' misplaced priorities.
KOTA KINABALU: While more than a 100,000 are said to have attended the Himpunan Kebagkitan Rakyat rally in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday (photo), the affair in Sabah proved to be a flop.
Just a couple of hundred youths turned up for the event at the Chong Thien Vun Park here on Saturday.
The blame was placed on the organisers and the lack of charismatic leaders to motivate would-be attendees in the run-up to the event.
Blogger and activist Ronnie Klassen described the rally as a fiasco with an estimated 300 participants at the park.
Klassen believes that the event here was poorly organised and reflected the discord and disunity among the organisers comprising youths aligned to the various opposition parties such as Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), PKR, DAP and PAS.
“Instead of showing solidarity among themselves, these youths were literally elbowing each other in order to steal the limelight. But, I don’t blame them; I blame their so-called leaders for they themselves were fighting with each other most of the time.
“With such an attitude, they (the opposition) must be dreaming or hallucinating if they really think they can defeat the BN in the coming general election. Anyway, I wish them good luck,” he said.
The confusion was demonstrated at the press conference held at the end of the rally with speakers merely shouting slogans such as “Jatuhkan Umno/BN” and “Tenggelam BN”.
Klassen, who is also the deputy chairman of Demokrasi Sabah (Desah), a Sabah-based political pressure group who are pushing for a ‘one-to-one’ fight between the opposition and BN, also pointed to the conspicuous absence of state opposition leaders at Saturday’s rally here.
With reports that many of the state’s opposition figures were attending the rally in Stadium Merdeka, the blogger said they appeared to have downplayed the importance of having a similar rally in Sabah.
“Have they forgotten that their presence in Sabah was more important than in Kuala Lumpur, so as to be seen with the national opposition leaders like Anwar Ibrahim, Lim Kit Siang or Awang Hadi? Or have they decided to stand as candidates in Petaling Jaya, Kepong or Kampung Baru?”
He said the slip up clearly demonstrated that their desire to be seen among their national leaders was much greater than to be with fellow Sabahans, who they are paradoxically asking to vote for them in the coming general election.
DO NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!
ReplyDeleteA FEW HUNDRED PEOPLE AT THE RALLY IS A FEW HUNDRED MORE THAN SLEEPY SARAWAKIANS WHO SLEPT THROUGH THE WHOLE EVENT!
WE SHOULD FEEL DISAPPOINTED FOR SARAWAKIANS NOT SABAHANS
WHY? THIS IS BECAUSE THEY ARE LED BY MALAYANS!
IT IS NOT IN THE INTEREST OF THE MALAYAN MASTERS TO STIR UP SLEEPY SARAWAKIANS....LEST THEY BECOME TOO VOCAL & ORGANISED LIKE SABAHANS.
ORGANISING IS A VITAL KEY TO CHANGE...
SAPP STAR YOUTHS & OTHERS SHOULD START TALKING TO EACH OTHERS AND PREPARE THEMSELVES FOR YET BIGGER STRUGGLES AHEAD.
THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR SABAH & NOT TO EXPECT TOO MUCH. IF YOUR LEADERS ARE NOT DOING THE UNITING - YOU TAKE THE LEAD ... YOU ARE MORE IN NUMBERS THAN THEY ARE....
THE FUTURE AND SECURITY OF SABAH IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN WORRYING ABOUT YOUR SABAH LEADERS LACK OF LEADERSHIP!
DeleteTo some extent, the gathering is success and these symbolised something actually.
DeletePembangkang sengaja mau menimbulkan masalah.
DeleteTrue 1Malaysia exists in Sabah
ReplyDeleteHOW many Malaysians have been to Sabah?
I have been to several cities like Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Tawau and several other small towns several times and I always get the same feeling: people there are seriously united.
DeleteThey communicate with each other in Bahasa Malaysia, with a heavy accent ending with a “bah”.
DeleteEven though they are Malays, Chinese, Indians, Kadazans or others, they speak similarly.
DeleteTo those who have never set foot there, I suggest you plan a holiday there instead of to other countries and I can assure you it will be worthwhile.
DeleteBorn in Penang, later educated in Kuala Lumpur and working in Johor Baru, I got used to the fact that if I wanted food, I will go to a “Mamak” restaurant, Malay restaurant or any fast food outlet.
DeleteChinese or Indian restaurants won’t cross my mind as the food there is not “halal”.
DeleteI could remember the very first time I went to Sabah, it was time for breakfast and my friend, a Sabahan and also a Muslim, brought me to this typical Chinese looking restaurant which we normally see in the peninsula.
DeleteOver here, it is obvious that I, as a Muslim, won’t be able to eat the food there because of the “halal” factor.
DeleteBut to my surprise, the patrons there in that restaurant were mostly Muslims. The food served was normal “nasi lemak”.
DeleteI was quite skeptical at first and when I tried to get an assurance from the owner himself, he proudly said: “We Sabahans understand each other well.”
DeleteThinking that the morning scene in the Chinese restaurant was a coincidence, I suggested to have lunch in another Chinese restaurant.
DeleteTrue enough, the scenario was the same: most of the patrons were Muslims.
DeleteAt night, it was time for a “feel” of the night life in Tawau and we went to a popular “dangdut” outlet.
DeleteAgain, I was surprised to see many Chinese there.
DeleteIn Peninsular Malaysia, “dangdut” outlets are normally filled with Malays.
When it comes to food, Sabahans have shown us the true meaning of unity in terms of a simple meal.
DeleteIt is so easy to slur another person, another religion or another race on various websites these days, but is this what we want to do as a responsible citizen?
Delete
DeleteI feel the way to understand 1Malaysia is by starting to look at how Sabahans live.
O copy the article written by Halim Chew,From Kajang which the article published on september 28, 2010 : the star Online.
DeleteSee how others admire our culture, out unity as a Sabahans. Do we need to change anything?

DeleteFiasco?
ReplyDeleteWell let them be.
ReplyDeleteThis rally is nothing but a waste of time.
ReplyDeleteRonnie says opposition leaders look desperate.
ReplyDeletePerhaps they are playing with nonsense things.
ReplyDeleteEven more so, they shouldn't be there at the first place.
ReplyDeleteTarnish the image.
ReplyDeleteGood luck.
ReplyDeleteDemontrasi akan menjejas imej baik negara khas industri pelancongan.
