SAPP to Harris: Set place and time of debate

KOTA KINABALU - Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) has urged former Chief Minister of Sabah Tan Sri Harris Mohd Salleh to quickly name the place, date and time for the proposed debate on oil between him and its president Datuk Yong Teck Lee.

Its youth chief Edward Dagul said this is only appropriate because the issue of oil and gas has gained media spot light again, citing the recent revelation by Energy, Green Technology and Water Deputy Minister Datuk Mahdzir Khalid that the Federal government is toying with plans to revive the coal-fired power plant project in Sabah.

“Now that the federal government wants to revive the coal power plant, the piping of Sabah’s oil and gas to the Petronas Liquefied Natural Gas plant in Bintulu for export is back in the public’s attention.

“There is no reason for any delay because Yong had already said that Harris may choose the place, date and time. Yong even allows Harris to pick the organiser and moderator, two very important factors in any debate,” said Dagul.

A member of the panel representing Yong in the proposed 1998 debate between Harris and Yong, Dagul recalled that in August 1998, he and several others had met with Harris’s panel led by Datuk Monggoh Orow, assisted by Jimmy Wong Sze Phin.

“But while the details of the proposed debate were being discussed, Harris abruptly cancelled the debate, saying that he could not have the debate without the government official files” said Dagul.

Dagul said he was speaking in his personal capacity because the debate between Harris and Yong is not between Harris’s old party Bersekutu and SAPP led by Yong.

“I speak out today because some people do not know what happened 15 years ago. Many people are still eager to watch a debate between Harris and Yong, both of whom are known to be good speakers and fierce debaters in their own right but for different causes, said Dagul, adding that he believed many people, especially the younger generation will benefit from the debate.
