In announcing the resolutions, the rebel faction also endorsed Senator Chin Su Phin as acting president in accordance with Clause 12 (c) of the party constitution.
KOTA KINABALU: Embattled Sabah Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) president VK Liew asserted that the Barisan Nasional headquarters “will not” endorse resolutions passed at an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) called by a rebel faction of the party yesterday.
Liew said the Special Meeting of the Party Conference (EGM) by the rebel faction was “illegal” and not sanctioned by the Supreme Council and the party headquarters.
As such all resolutions passed at the Special Meeting were therefore illegal.
“I have been informed by the Barisan Nasional (BN) headquarters that it will not recognise it (the meeting). To do so will set a bad precedence. It fails to follow the party’s constitution,” he said.
Liew, a former deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department who lost his Sandakan MP seat in the 13th general election earlier this year, was commenting on the resolutions passed by the rebel group at the EGM yesterday.
Aside from passing a vote of no confidence against Liew, delegates at the special meeting also unanimously endorsed the resolution passed by the Supreme Council on September 10 to remove Liew from his position as the party president.
In announcing the resolutions the special meeting chairman Frank Leong said the delegates also endorsed Senator Chin Su Phin as acting president in accordance with Clause 12 (c) of the party constitution with immediate effect.
Apart from that, the delegates passed other resolutions, including endorsing those passed by the supreme council on Sept 10 to suspend the membership of Liew and its newly appointed secretary-general Loretto S. Padua, pending action by the disciplinary committee.
‘Real’ party AGM on Oct 19
Meanwhile, Liew welcomed the recent statement by Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin who wanted the internal problems of the Sabah-based party to be resolved soon in the interest of preserving harmony in the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition.
Expressing concern over the leadership crisis in the party, Muhyiddin, who is also BN deputy chairman, was quoted as saying , here, last week that he had directed BN secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor to discuss with these parties whether there was a possibility of reconciling or solving the problems and achieving understanding to mitigate them. Liew’s faction is planning to hold the party’s annual general meeting (AGM) on Oct 19 in Sandakan.
