When approached by enforcement officers during the Ops Bersepadu early yesterday morning, the 45-year-old woman, who claimed to be from Sabah, was found to have used a fake MyKad number based on the name on her name tag, which was “Nuraini”.
Penang Immigration Department enforcement assistant director Basri Othman said a background check on the woman showed that she was actually from the Philippines.
“The tag provided by the security firm to the guard were meant to deceive the residents and the authorities into believing that she was a real security guard,” he said at a press conference at the state Immigration Department headquarters yesterday.
The woman was among 20 illegal immigrants detained for not having valid documents. A total of 46 foreign security guards were screened at 12 residential areas on Penang island.
Twelve Nepalese, five Pakistanis and three Filipinos were arrested for not having valid travel documents and for violating their social visit passes.
They were brought to the state Immigration Department headquarters in Seberang Jaya and remanded for 14 days to assist in investigations under the Immigration Act for violating their passes and for not having valid travel documents.
“We are investigating whether the security firms involved are registered. The employers will be investigated for hiring illegal immigrants,” he added.
Basri said more operations against bogus security guards would be carried out from time to time.
He urged the public to contact the state Immigration Department hotline at 04-3973011 and 04-3906170 if they had information about fake security guards in their areas.
