Detention of 'Melaka sultan' lawful: Zahid

PUTRAJAYA - The police detention of Raja Noor Jan Shah Raja Tuah, who claims to be the sultan of Melaka, is lawful and based on the Federal Constitution, Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zahid Hamidi said here today.

According to the 'Sejarah Melayu' (Malay Annals) and studies, such as on the life of legendary Malay warrior Hang Tuah, the last sultan of Melaka was Sultan Mahmud Shah (1488-1511), he noted.

When the Straits Settlements were formed, comprising Melaka, Penang and Singapore, no individuals were allowed to claim the throne of the sultanate in these states under the state and federal constitutions.

"In this case, the police acted based on state laws as well as the state and federal constitutions.

"I hope any individual or group intending to claim the Melaka throne will drop the matter once and for all. We must acknowledge the facts, history and laws as the reality," he told a press conference after attending the launch of the Royal Malaysia Police football team here today.

Raja Noor Jan Shah was detained at 10.50 am today to facilitate an investigation under the Sedition Act on allegations of having held several unrecognised investiture ceremonies.

On a separate development, Ahmad Zahid said foreign students who wished to work part-time in fast food outlets should inform the Labour Department and Immigration Department beforehand.

"Fast food restaurants may recruit both local and foreign students as part-time workers; there are no restrictions," he said.

Commenting on the incident involving Deputy Education Minister P. Kamalanathan, who was allegedly punched by a man at the Hulu Selangor Member of Parliament service centre in Bandar Bukit Beruntung, Rawang, Ahmad Zahid described it as embarrassing.

"As a deputy education minister representing the country's educational institution, Kamalanathan should be respected. In any case, there are rules in place at the Education Ministry regarding matters on transfer of teachers.

"Kamalanathan has lodged a police report and we will take action against the individual," he said.
