Idris Jala told to quit over 'Allah' fiasco

Several quarters in Sarawak are urging Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Idris Jala, one of the architects behind the 10-point solution, to quit.

Gerempong Besai Christian Jaku Iban (GBCJI) secretary Patrick Sibat said that it seems like Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak no longer has confidence in him.

"Personally, I think Idris should quit if the prime minister no longer trusts and respects him," he added when contacted today.

When the 10-point solution was announced in April 2011, federal Christian ministers described it as the best solution to ensure that Christians are able to worship in a language of their choice and it secures the right to worship.

Point number 10 states that Christian ministers in the cabinet will meet on a regular basis with representatives of various Christians groups in order to discuss their issues and work with the relevant ministries and prime minister to resolve them.

"The prime minister has also been silent on the issue of Allah and so have Idris and other Christian ministers.

"Idris was appointed to look after Christian welfare in the country, why is he so silent over the raid by the Selangor Islamic authority (Jais) and the seizure of the Malay and Iban versions of the bible from the Bible Society of Malaysia," said Sibat.

Idris Jala is a Kelabit from Sarawak.

Meanwhile, Sarawak PKR chief Baru Bian said that he will not urge Idris to resign as he did not know what transpired in the cabinet.

"But if I were in Idris' position, I would tell Najib to respect and honour the 10-point solution, failing which I would resign because it would mean that my role is meaningless,” he added.

His colleague, MAS Gading PKR committee member Boniface Willy Tumek said that Idris was the one who sold the 10-point solution to Christians in Sarawak one month before the state election.

"Everyone in Sarawak and Sabah accepted the solution believing that the federal government would honour it. Now the federal government did not honour it, then the best thing for Idris to do is to resign.

"If I were him I would not be part and parcel of an oppressive regime against my own people and Christians in Sarawak," he added.

Serian DAP chairperson Edward Andrew Luak agreed that Idris should immediately quit as minister as the 10-point solution has been rendered useless.

"Nobody respects it, not even the prime minister," he said.
