McDonald's kangkung ad retracted, fear of govt reprimand

McDonald’s Malaysia has retracted publicity material which seemed to poke fun at the prime minister’s controversial ‘kangkung’ remark.

The popular fastfood chain told Malaysiakini that the material was actually “unapproved” and slipped through official vetting.

“McDonald’s Malaysia wishes to clarify that due to a communication oversight, the unapproved visual was produced and made its way to our restaurants.

“All the materials have been immediately removed,” it said in a brief reply when contacted.

The material, first spotted on tables at McDonald’s restaurants in the Klang Valley as part of the McSavers marketing campaign, reads:

'Harga sayur tidak turun, tapi harga burger tetap turun.' (The price of vegetables didn't go down, but burger prices have.)

The material was removed from tables a few days later.

McDonald’s Malaysia issued an apology for “any concern” the material may have caused and said it has taken steps to prevent “recurrence of unwarranted material”.

The sentence appeared to be in reference to a remark by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak about how the prices of kangkung have come down.

The remark, made by the PM to illustrate how food prices fluctuate due to external factors and not government policy, was heavily lampooned by the public.

Interestingly, the latest consumer price index showed that kangkung prices had gone up drastically last December.

Inflation is on the rise following cuts in consumer subsidies, causing, among others, higher fuel pump prices and electricity tariff.

To ease pressure on consumers, the government has expanded the net of those who qualify for cash aid under Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M), as well as raise the quantum of the aid.

It has also worked with supermarkets to encourage price cuts and is monitoring for unreasonable profiteering.
