PAS considers fresh polls, keeps options open

Terengganu PAS is taking a "wait-and-see" approach to the resignations of the three Umno assemblypersons before deciding on its next course of action.

"The top leadership in Terengganu PAS is waiting for things to develop to see what is the final score, so to speak," PAS' Kuala Terengganu MP Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad told Malaysiakini today.

"This is an internal Umno problem and we don't want to be seen to be instigating anything.

"We will make a decision when it is clear who is on which side."

He said that although Pakatan Rakyat was advised that it can form government with a one-seat majority, there are now differing views from the state legal adviser who claims that the legistlative assembly speaker is considered a BN representative.

"Personally, I feel that in the long-term it is better to go back to the polls. We cannot be in a stalemate. It is more stable to let people decide."

This view was echoed by PAS' Batu Burok assemblyperson Syed Azman Ahmad Nawawi who said PAS was "being cautious" in order to weigh all options.

Syed Azman said that the options, including asking for a dissolution of the state assembly, would be discussed at an emergency meeting.

Terengganu PAS commissioner Satiful Bahri Mamat, in a brief statement, also urged patience.

As at noon today, three Terengganu assemblypersons have quit Umno and declared themselves Independents. More are expected to follow suit.

Central leadership prefers polls

Leading the move was Kijal assemblyperson Ahmad Said, who was replaced as menteri besar yesterday.

This makes the state government a minority government, with BN holding 14 seats, Pakatan Rakyat 15 and the three who resigned from Umno now being Independents.

The statements from the Terengganu PAS representatives came as the party's central leadership indicated its preference for a fresh state election.

"To protect the good name of the sultan and the palace in this political crisis, it is better for the Speaker to act swiftly and declare the assembly dissolved," information chief Mahfuz Omar is quoted as saying by party mouthpiece Harakahdaily.

Meanwhile, PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu told Astro Awani that the party will go "the right way".

"We will use the right procedures, with a vote of no confidence against the Terengganu MB in the assembly.

"The method used by BN in Perak before is wrong, we will not do things that do not adhere to procedures," he is quoted as saying.

In the 2008 Perak crisis, the MB's request to dissolve assembly following defections was refused by the sultan. BN then formed the new government.
