Abducted cop alive, contacted his wife on Sunday night, says report

Police Constable Zakiah Aleip who was kidnapped by Filipino gunmen telephoned his wife last night to say he was alive, The Star reported today.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar told The Star that he had telephoned his wife Sharifah Erna Berson on Sunday night and told her that he was okay, except that he was with some people.

Khalid also said they did not know where Zakiah was being held but roughly knew the identities of some of those involved in the attack on Pulau Mabul on Saturday night.

Zakiah, 26, was kidnapped after his colleague Corporal Abdul Rajah Jamuan, 32, was shot dead in the attack at the Mabul Water Bungalows Resort in Semporna.

The Star reported that Rajah was buried today with full honours at the Muslim cemetery near his home village of Kampung Bubul, about six kilometres from the Sabah east coast town.

His widow Salamah Ahmad and parents Jamuan Ajuan and Kamsiah Indaman were present, along with Sabah Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Abdul Malek Harun.

Eight Filipino masked gunmen in military fatigues were involved in the attack, after which they fled to southern Philippines.

The Star reported that the authorities are also trying to determine the group responsible for the commando-style stealth attack and whether they were from the Abu Sayyaf group, a breakaway Moro faction linked to MMLF or the so-called Sulu Sultanate’s royal army.

Unlike previous raids carried out by kidnap-for-ransom bandits based in neighbouring Tawi Tawi islands, the latest group came with the intent to kill, The Star reported.

They arrived with guns blazing at the resort and according to some security officials, it was clear that they had intended to hit the security outposts although they could also have taken tourists as hostages.
