Thief stopped by crowd in Donggongon

KOTA KINABALU - A man who allegedly stole an iPad from a handphone trader was apprehended by bystanders as he tried to escape with the device at the Buhavan Square in Penampang near here.

The 40-year-old illegal immigrant was apprehended after the trader shouted for help as soon as he was robbed, prompting bystanders to chase down and apprehend the suspect in the 11am incident on Thursday.

After apprehending the suspect, they tied him up while waiting for police to arrive.

It was understood that the suspect entered his victim’s premises posing as a customer, and asked to have a look at the iPad on sale before fleeing with it.

Penampang district police chief Supt Ratan Singh said the man has been detained and will be investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.

The man did not have any documents on him, he said.
