KOTA KINABALU: Only 264,085 out of 608,809 parking compounds issued by Kota Kinabalu City Hall in 2003 and 2014 have been settled, leaving unsettled arrears amounting to some RM58 million.
Abidin, Yeo, City Hall enforcement officers and other staff with motorists who settled their outstanding parking compounds at a lower rate yesterday.
Launching a two-month amnesty period for parking compound defaulters at the City Hall grounds here yesterday, Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir, said that by waiving the hefty outstanding compounds to only RM30 for each summons means the City Hall would be able to recover only some RM10 million out of the RM58 million, if all the compounds are settled.
The amnesty period was implemented in conjunction with the upcoming Merdeka (Independence) Day and Malaysia Day, to give defaulters an opportunity to settle their reduced compounds starting yesterday until October 3 this year.
“However, the rate is not for cases that have been filed at the City Court or the special compounds issued from March 17, on lorries, trailers, heavy machinery, taxis, mini buses, tour buses, motorcycles, and Minor Ordinance offenders,” he said.
Abidin said that after the said period, City Hall will be conducting mass issuance of parking outstanding notices to all defaulters, with the help of the Road Transport Department (JPJ) through its JPJ-Link system.
“Defaulters, who had been issued arrears notices after this period, will no longer be able to enjoy the 100 per cent penalty exemption, meaning they will be charged 20 per cent from the total penalty for parking arrears,” he said.
Hence, he added, motorists are encouraged to update their parking fee arrears before City Hall starts implementing the mass issuance of notices.
Motorists can log on to ecompound website for online enquiry on their summonses and compounds.
Meanwhile, Abidin also advised those who have purchased used vehicles to check with City Hall or the Road Transport Department on possible summonses and compound arrears.
“This is to avoid purchasers of used cars having to settle the compounds or summons of the car’s previous owner,” he said, stressing on the importance of informing City Hall and the RTD on any vehicle trade exchange.
Parking defaulters are now being given two months to settle their parking offences compounds issued by the Kota Kinabalu City Hall, starting yesterday to October 3 this year.
The summonses can be settled at five counters, which will be opened during the amnesty period, namely at the City Hall main counter, Damai counter, Centre Point Sabah counter, UTC counter, the sixth floor of UTC building, DBKK Holdings counter, and first floor of KK Plaza.
