Stay away from Malaya's racial and religious issues, Sabah teachers told

Stay away from racial and religious issues — Sabah Education Department director Datuk Jame Alip has warned teachers in the state.

“Participating in forums or dialogues on the two issues would not only affect the existing peace and harmony we have been enjoying now, but also destabilises the country, and state, in particular,” he said.

He warned the department will not hesitate to take action against teachers who are caught making racist statements in public, or on the social media.

“There will be no more compromising. In fact, the issue of where the teacher originates is immaterial… we should stop all this labelling.

“If you come from Kelantan, you will be labelled as a Kelantan teacher; if you come from Sarawak, you are a Sarawak teacher and the same when you come from Sabah, you’ll be a Sabah teacher. Why can’t we just say we are Malaysian teachers, it saves us from making racial remarks that may hurt other people,” he said when met after visiting Sekolah Kebangsaan St Catherine in Inanam that was badly hit by flashfloods following non-stop rain yesterday.

He also advised teachers to ignore any racial remarks made on the social media, adding that they need not be heroes to make a stand.

“Commenting on such post or remarks would only make it worst, so why stoop down to their level when we know they are not telling the truth,” he said.

Touching on a recent case involving a primary school religious teacher in Tenom who belittled the intellectual quality of Sabahans in her posting on Facebook, Jame said the department has submitted the full report to the Sabah Education Ministry.

“I do not know what action will be taken.against the ustazah at Sekolah Kebangsaan Baru Jumpa in Tenom, because that’s.beyond my jurisdiction.

“We have forwarded the report to the.ministry following complaints from certain quarters. I just hope that this will serve as a reminder to all teachers to watch what they write or say in public and on the social.media,” he said.
