Police urged to investigate Umno division leader for Sedition

PETALING JAYA - MCA's Religious Harmony Bureau urged the police to investigate an Umno division leader for alleged sedition as he called for a debate on the abolishment of Chinese vernacular schools in the party's coming Annual General Meeting (AGM) in November.

Bureau chairman Datuk Ti Lian Ker said Umno Petaling Jaya Utara deputy chairman Mohamed Azli Mohemed Saad's statement contravenes the Federal Constitution and BN's spirit of inclusiveness.

"Not only has Mohamed Azli challenged the rights of all Malaysians to study in their mother-tongue, but he has also questioned the legitimate rights of the Chinese community to education.

"His careless call is liable to create racial tension; as such, I urge the police to investigate Mohamed Azli for Sedition," Ti said in a statement today.

He said a former Umno MP from Sabah, Mark Koding, was charged with Sedition after calling for the abolishment of Chinese and Tamil vernacular schools in Parliament in 1978.

Ti said BN will defend the rights of all Malaysians to learn in their mother tongue as promised in the 13th General Election and noted that it is a policy that has been around since independence.

"The BN government had pledged to continue funding the construction of national-type schools, and if Mohamed Azli disagrees with this, he is very much welcomed to leave BN," he said.

He added that national-type vernacular primary schools are part and parcel to Malaysia's education and must not be denied to their respective communities.

Mohamed Azli was alleged to have said Chinese vernacular schools are exploited by Opposition parties to incite hatred towards other races and to spread anti-government sentiments.

He also said that Chinese schools should be placed under the Education Ministry instead of being allowed to operate independently.
