Yong: Sabahans will experience more hardship

KOTA KINABALU - Sabahans will experience more hardship in trying to cope with another round of spiralling price rises caused by yet another fuel price hike, said former Chief Minister Datuk Yong Teck Lee on Thursday.

“The impact of fuel hikes is not only on motorists. Fuel price rises always have a chain effect on any goods and services that move.

Sabah’s vast geography and bad roads add to the costs of transportation.

“The sad thing is that Sabah as an exporter of oil should logically benefit from rising oil prices in the world market. How is it that Sabah stands to lose out when oil prices go up? asked Yong who is SAPP President.

“ We see how oil exporting countries like Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Russia, Sudan and Norway have benefitted from rising oil prices.

Even small countries like Brunei,Bahrain, Qatar and now South Sudan enjoy prosperity because of their oil reserves.

“But we in Sabah seem to lose out each time the oil prices increase. This does not make sense.

“Ever since the first round of fuel hikes in 2008,1 have raised this issue many times but neither Petronas nor the Federal government has given any explanation,” said Yong.

“If this suffering continues, then Sabahans should demand to take back the entire oil ownership so that Sabah has control over our own oil and gas reserves and not leave it to Petronas or the Federal government”.
