KUALA LUMPUR - Convicted killer Sirul Azhar Umar has accused the Inspector-General of Police of lying about the Altantuya murder case in order to “protect his boss”.
Sirul said IGP Khalid Abu Bakar had lied in saying the police sent people to Australia to meet him.
“Let me tell you, there were no officers or police personnel who met me in Australia,” he told Malaysiakini in a telephone conversation this morning.
“He (IGP) is lying to the police force and lying to the public with his claims and is trying to protect his boss,” he was quoted as saying.
Yesterday, Khalid was quoted by Bernama as saying the police had already met Sirul to gather information on allegations he had made that he was acting under orders when he killed Altantuya eight years ago.
But Sirul told Malaysiakini: “No one came to see from the police force to investigate or ask about my welfare. I am alone here.” Malaysiakini said Sirul was heard weeping during the telephone conversation, at 2.3am on Saturday (5.30am in Australia).
Sirul is being held at an immigration detention centre in Australia after fleeing there while awaiting the outcome of a Federal Court decision in the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder case.
The court affirmed the conviction and death sentence on Sirul and fellow police commando Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri. Both men were serving as bodyguards to Najib Abdul Razak, then deputy prime minister, when the murder took place in 2006.
“If the police and public want to know the truth, I challenge Khalid to open the ‘intelligence’ file,” Sirul reportedly said, referring to the original statement he gave Special Branch and the CID when he was arrested for the murder.
He is reported to have confessed to killing Altantuya, who has been linked to the Navy’s purchase of two French-built submarines, and to have stated that he was acting under orders - FMT
