MACC to pay RM600,000 in damages to family of Teoh Beng Hock

PETALING JAYA - The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC) has agreed to pay RM600,000 to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock.

Gobind Singh Deo, the Puchong Member of Parliament said it was great victory for the family as after six years of legal battles, the MACC and government had now acknowledged that they are responsible for Teoh's death.

"The suit against the MACC and the government had gone on for six years and despite the agreement on the damages, Teoh's family pushed for those responsible for his death to be charged in accordance with criminal law," he said in a statement today.

Teoh, who was the political aide to Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on July 16, 2009 on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam. He was earlier called by the MACC for interrogation over his employer's alleged abuse of state funds a day earlier.

The family filed a suit in October 2012 and the defendants counter-claimed that Teoh's death was caused by his own negligence.

"The family said in court today that they accepted the payment to the extent of the claim for negligence but demanded that police conduct further investigations into the matter and charge those persons responsible for his death.

Gobind, who took over the case from the late Karpal Singh, said the onus was now on the police to do what was necessary to ensure justice was served, while he (Gobind), on behalf of the DAP National Legal Bureau, will do his part and push for the truth.

Gobind also said he will not seek any payment despite today's developments as he had been working pro bono on the case.

"This was the clear instructions given to me by my late father in respect of his services in this case before his untimely death last year," he added.
