Zaid: OSA to protect crooks from whistleblowers

Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has reminded attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali that the country’s secrets are not the same as those of a penyangak (crook).

“I want to remind Apandi that the country’s official secrets are not the same as the secrets of a country’s penyangak,” said Zaid in his speech while opening the People’s Congress in Shah Alam today.

Crooks and their allies, said Zaid, should be imprisoned. And if possible, be given a life sentence.

He was responding to Apandi who had said that the Official Secrets Act (OSA) will be strengthened so that whistleblowers will be given a life imprisonment.

Zaid today did not mention any names but it is clear that his remarks were in reference to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Meanwhile, true to the event’s aim to demand for the resignation of Najib, Zaid said apart from rejecting the premier, those who are in cahoots with Najib on the scandal should be rejected as well.

“They hold high posts in political parties as well as hold posts in the government. They supposedly reject corruption and want Islam, but in actuality, they like corruption.

“These people are part of those who makan dedak (can be bought),” he said.

Najib has continuously denied any wrongdoing and was cleared by Apandi who declined to prosecute on investigation papers sent by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) concerning the RM2.6 billion political donation and RM42 million from SRC International transferred into Najib’s personal bank accounts.

Zaid, meanwhile, also urged the various leaders here today to go to the ground to meet people from the villages. This, he said, is because villagers are worried when it comes to change.

“They are still scared and are confused (on this group’s) aim. Explain to those who still don’t understand how corruption is the number one reason why they live the way they are today,” he said.

The country, he added, needs change at all levels. This way, even former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim could be together with everyone here today, he said.
