Man who smashed Hindu idols mentally unstable, says IGP

Police say suspect was a medical doctor who was recently fired from his job due to his mental condition.

PETALING JAYA - The man who recently ran amok and smashed several deities in a Hindu temple in Ipoh yesterday was a medical doctor and mentally unstable.

The Star Online quoted Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar as saying the 29-year-old was recently fired from his job at Ipoh Hospital due to his mental condition.

“We have sent him to Hospital Bahagia in Tanjung Rambutan to be evaluated,” Khalid was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile Khalid called for calm among members of the Indian community, and said police had contacted their leaders in Ipoh to explain the facts behind the incident.

The incident occurred about 5pm on Sunday when the suspect, with a machete in hand, opened the unlocked gate at the temple and walked inside.

With a metal rod he took from his car, the suspect began smashing the statues of deities inside the temple although he could not access those in the main altar as the area was locked.

Taking off in his car after, the suspect however met with an accident soon afterwards, and was arrested by police at the scene.

The incident has taken a racial twist on social media with many outraged netizens lodging police reports against the suspect.
