Over 1,000 homeless in Kudat fire

KOTA KINABALU: Firemen are continuing to fight a predawn major fire that has spread through a massive squatter colony in Sabah’s northern Kudat about 200kms from here.

An estimated 250 houses have been destroyed as firemen continue to battle the blaze at the settlement of wooden stilt houses at Kg Landung Ayang Laut about three kilometres from Kudat town.

A spokesman said the fire began about 5am Monday and was brought under control by about 8am.

So far there has been no reports of any casualties and an estimated over 1,000 people may have lost their homes.
