In a statement today, Sarawak police commissioner Mazlan Mansor said a suspect had confessed to the crime.
He then led police to his home in Jalan Hai Nam Lama, where the weapon was hidden, about 5pm.
Mazlan said police also recovered several shotgun shells, including a spent cartridge.
The suspect was one of six people detained in an operation spanning last Thursday night and Friday morning.
They comprised five men and one woman, aged between 22 and 41.
With the arrests and recovery of the shotgun, we are confident that the murder case of Bill Kayong has been solved,” Mazlan said in a statement today.
“The task force is still searching for several suspects still at large.
“Further details regarding these suspects cannot be released at the moment. The police are finalising their investigations for the purpose of charging the suspects (involved in murder) in court.”
Bill was shot dead at 8.15am on June 21 by a lone gunman while in his vehicle at the traffic intersection near E-Mart, a mall in Tudan, Miri.
Post mortem and forensic examination on the vehicle revealed that the gunman had used a shotgun. Bill was shot once in the neck.
There were no witnesses to the murder and no closed circuit television cameras near the crime scene.
Following the murder, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar had set up a police task force, headed by Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief SAC Dev Kumar.
Several forensic specialists from Bukit Aman CID had also joined in the investigation.
