Police probing how nerve agent got into country
SEPANG - Police will ask the Atomic Energy Licensing Board to carry out a sweep of the KL International Airport 2 for traces of the highly toxic VX nerve agent.
VX, listed as a weapon of mass destruction by the United Nations, has been identified as the chemical used in the murder of Kim Jong-nam at KLIA2 on Feb 13.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said there could still be traces of the chemical at the scene following the incident when two women swabbed Jong-nam's face with it.
"Yes, we are worried about that but I am not the expert so we will get the experts to come and check," Khalid said at KL International Airport on Friday.
He said, however, that there "is no need to stay away" from KLIA2 or to cordon off the area just yet.
"Let us get it checked first," he said.
Khalid confirmed that one of the women suspects was suffering from side effects of the chemical.
"She vomited a few times due to coming into contact with it," he said.
The two women - a Vietnamese and an Indonesian - along with two men were detained following the incident.
Jong-nam, the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, was to catch a flight to Macau when two women swabbed his face with a chemical.
He sought help at the customer service counter and was treated at the airport clinic but died on the way to Putrajaya Hospital.
