Elderly pedestrian fatally rammed by vehicle

KOTA KINABALU - An elderly pedestrian’s attempt to cross a busy three-lane road in front of the Centre Point shopping complex here cost him his life when he was fatally struck on Tuesday.

Yusof@Mohd Yussof Baladan, 72, tried to dash across the road but was hit by a Toyota Prado driven by a 75-year-old businessman..

Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm M. Chandra said Yusof died on the spot following the impact of the crash.

“According to a statement recorded by the driver, the victim suddenly ran across the road and he could not brake in time,” he said.

The businessman escaped unscathed in the accident.

The case is being investigated under section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Earlier, the accident was the source of unfounded claims of a shooting outside the Centre Point shopping complex.

Asst. Comm Chandra dismissed the claims of a shooting that allegedly killed three people in front of the shopping complex which went viral on social media especially WhatsApp late on Tuesday night.
