In a sudden turn of event, Komtar assemblyperson Ng Wei Aik, who had vehemently denied that he uttered a racist slur against an Indian-Muslim restaurant owner, will be tendering an apology this morning.
Ng will apologise to restaurant owner Syed Kassali Mohammed Aliyar at a press conference to be held in Komtar. However, it is uncertain whether the apology is for the racist comment or for joining a team of Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) personnel to raid the restaurant.
The apology came ahead of another protest planned this afternoon at 2pm in Komtar against Ng by a group who calls themselves Suara Anak-Anak Mamak Pulau Pinang (Voice of Penang Mamak).
Last week, the Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress (Kimma) also held a rally and handed a memorandum to Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng urging him to act against Ng, who is his political secretary.
Ng caused a furore among the Indian-Muslim community in Penang recently after raiding the restaurant in Gat Lebuh Macallum on Jan 2, where he had allegedly told the owner and workers to “tutup kedai, balik India”.
He was at the premises with the MPPP team following an accident earlier that night involving two vehicles which nearly killed some customers who were having their meal at the road side.
Ng (photo, left), together with the enforcement team, seized tables, chairs, a gas cylinder and whatever obstructive equipments or structures along the road and the pedestrian walkway.
However, following the controversy, Ng vowed never to be involved in any enforcement activity of the MPPP in future to avoid slanderous claims made against him.
