‘Profiteering BN govt exploiting people’

Joseph Tawie

Price increase in RON97 is BN's gratitude for Tenang win, says DAP.

KUCHING: The increase in global oil prices is no reason to slap the additional 10 sen on the RON97 fuel, says Sarawak DAP.

State secretary Chong Chieng Jen said there was no reason to increase fuel prices because the hike in international oil price meant that  Malaysia and Petronas were “actually getting more revenue” from the sale of oil.

“The increase in global oil prices is actually a plus point and increases the revenue of the government and yet they exploit the people by increasing the petrol price.

“This only proves a point that the stronger BN is, the more it will tax the people and the more it exploit the people because they take people for granted,” he said.

This is the second increase for the RON97 fuel, which is now sold at RM2.50 per litre.  On Jan 4, the government had increased the price of RON97 to RM2.40 a litre.

Chong, who is also Bandar Kuching MP, was commenting on the increase in RON97 petrol by 10 sen effective today.

“This is the perfect Chinese New Year present given by the BN for its victory in last weekend’s Tenang by-election.

“A perfect Chinese New Year present to Malaysians at large. Now that the BN has got a big majority, it is confident of the people’s support.

“BN knows that it has no fear of the people and it feels that it can do as it likes.”

On Sunday, BN retained its hold on the Tenang state seat by a 3,707-vote majority. BN’s Mohd Azahar Ibrahim contested the seat against PAS candidate, Normala Sudirman.

The win has put BN in an euphoric mood. This is the third straight by-election victory for BN.

In November last year, BN won the Galas state seat and Batu Sapi parliamentary seat. Both by-elections were held simultaneously.

Next is the Merlimau polls. The seat fell vacant following the death of incumbent Mohamad Hidhir Abu Hassan.

Polling is set for March 6 while nomination is on Feb 26.
