Yong: Be wary of ‘Malayan’ parties

Queville To

The former chief minister says the Peninsula-based opposition parties have no right to talk about fighting for Sabah autonomy.

KOTA KINABALU: Former Sabah chief minister Yong Teck Lee cautioned Sabahans against the peninsula-based opposition parties’ talk of “fighting for Sabah autonomy” in their bid for support as the country gears up for 13th general election.

“The Malayan parties have no qualification or right to talk about or claim to be fighting for autonomy for Sabah, as they are all from across the South China Sea,” he told a gathering here on Monday night.

“We have been cheated from 1962 until now. We should not be cheated anymore,” he said in reference to DAP’s claim that it too was fighting for autonomy for Sabah.

Yong said that like the state Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties, Sabah DAP too had to take
instructions from its political masters in Kuala Lumpur.

He pointed out that Sabah DAP’s manifesto even blatantly talked about abolishing the 7.5% sales tax worth RM1 billion on crude palm oil, which would ultimately benefit the Peninsula-based major oil palm companies, including Felda.

Speaking to more than 400 guests at a gathering-cum-dinner, he also described Sabah DAP as a “loose set-up” which is subservient to its top leaders in the peninsula.

Yong said that Sabahans are capable of administering the state and deciding their own fate.

“Others can look down on us, but we should not look down on ourselves. We must always safeguard our dignity as Sabahans,” he said.

Reiterating SAPP’s intention to contest at least 40 seats in the coming general election, Yong said that this was in order to win enough seats to form the next state government.

Absolute right

Meanwhile, SAPP information chief Chong Pit Fah likened its fight for autonomy for the state, to a houseowner exercising his right to protect his property against intruders.

“As a thoroughbred Sabah political party, SAPP has the absolute right to contest in any constituency in Sabah that it chooses to contest. We are merely exercising our right as the rightful ‘houseowners’ or ‘landowners’,” he said.

On the ongoing distribution of cash under the Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) scheme, Chong urged the people to take whatever was being distributed by the BN government, but to vote for SAPP.

He described the BR1M scheme as a “vote-buying” exercise.

“Don’t be a fooled again after being cheated for more than 40 years. It’s time for us to vote the BN out.”

SAPP vice-president Wong Yit Ming, who was also present, accused state BN leaders of impoverishing the state to enrich themselves and their cronies.

“Most, if not all of them, are only looking after their own interests, while the people continue to languish and remain poor,” he said.

He cautioned Sabahans against putting all their trust in Peninsula-based opposition parties as there was no guarantee that they would not exploit the state’s rich natural resources as is happening now under the BN.

“We must not continue to put our fate in the hands of these parties from the Peninsula. After more than 40 years of plunder, enough is enough,” he said.

Others who were also present were SAPP leaders like Mohd Noor Mansoor and Paul Wong, deputy presidents Eric Majimbun, made Sidek and secretary-general Richard Yong.

    1. WHY BE WARY OF MALAYAN SNAKE OIL SELLERS?

We need to exercise caution in voting for Pakatan– we need check their Buku Jingga closely on what they offer.

Apart from the usual promises of justice progress and democracy we remain a honey pot for them to suck our resources like oils and gas.

More the sweet stuff has just been discovered and Petronas is in a joyful state. They are unlikely to stop pumping our oil revenue to fund development of peninsular Malayan states.

They control our oil and gas and do you think we will get our oil back without a real fight?

And even more sinister-which you may not have thought about seriously is that the Buku Jingga wants to “integrate Sabah and Sarawak" more closely with Malaya! Does not that worry you?

Sabahans already suffered from the tragic takeover by UMNO of the Sabah government and some 15 years of UMNO plunder not to mention the plunder of the past 30 years of our oil resources.

So do we still want another 50 years of this sham independence and progress (regress)?

Vote for a Sabah party that will fight for Sabah!

Malayan parties make sweet promises which they may not keep.

  3. SABAH IS RESOURCE RICH & CAN STAND ALONE AS INDEPENDENT COUNTRY.

MALAYSIA AGREEMENT IS VOID & SABAH CAN LEAVE MALAYSIA.

WHY BOTHER WITH "AUTONOMY" & REMAIN STUCK WITH MALAYA WHEN WE CAN EXERCISE SELF-RULE?

MALAYA NEEDS OUR RESOURCES & VOTES MORE THAN WE NEED MALAYA.

    WE CAN BE INDEPENDENT!

  4. Yong whilst I admire your fight for Sabah interest, I think you get your stategy wrong. Why are you harping on Sabah for sabahan only mentality. You need to work with PR if we want to liberate from BN. Peninsula party that cannot be trusted is BN but not all are like that. You should encourage us to look at big picture instead of hoping we warped in territorial mindset. All along, Sabah is ruled by sabahan like Yong but they choose to let Sabah raped of its rights n resources by BN for money n power. Don't hope that sabahan will vote you by making us afraid n distrust peninsula party. Even Yong won majority of seat he still need to work with federal government from peninsula!!

    1. SUPPORT MALAYAN COLONIALIST OPPOSITION PARTIES OR LOCAL PARTIES OR BOTH?

The question raised here is relevant on how to defeat UMNO at the polls.

We need a united opposition to defeat UMNO if our aim is not to keluar Malaysia or even as the interim objective to reach a stronger position to Keluar Malaysia.

BN currently controls 22 of the 25 federal seats in Sabah and 57 of 60 state seats. DAP holds one state and one federal seat while SAPP, formerly of BN, holds two each.

The current Federal seats distribution is not encouraging (not to mention the state assembly seats) which makes it all the more important for Sabah opposition to unite and fight for Sabah!

There is no harm for Sahahans to have a “territorial mindset” and think about Sabah interests first. If there had been a decent honest patriotic Sabah party we would all vote for it and no Malayan party would have a chance in Sabah! In fact a real patriotic Sabah party would have held power in the interest of Sabahans for the last 48 years. The Malayans never think about us for unless it is election time.

But our tragedy as in Sarawak is that we have been repeatedly betrayed by corrupt politicians who misplaced our trust in them to enrich themselves by selling our Sabah national interests to Malaya. The worse case of all time has been Haris Salleh signing away our oil rights in 1976. The other is UMNO federalization of Labuan and 300,000 acres of land for FELDA which it has left to fallow since 1979!

Now Sabah parties like the SAPP and STAR are campaigning for Sabah votes. Many of the leaders have been tainted by their corrupt past and inaction when they were in power. Now they seem to have experienced a change on the way to Damascus.....

They are in the opposition, the alternative shadow government as it were and the ones in position to take power if they win.

We the voters have to decide who to vote for- We are pulled this way and that by the Malayan opposition parties and our local parties.

This is a classic conflict of interest. Malayan colonial interest versus Sabah territorial interest.

It highlights how much we have lost our independence! And we live in an illusion that we have “independence in Malaysia” so we cannot definitely decide if we are staying or getting out of Malaysia!

The big brothers from Malaya are now telling us not to be Sabah-centric and think about how to help opposition Malayan parties gain power.

The UMNO government neglect and failure of the Malaysia promise of progress for Sabah and Sarawak and the “illegals” issue have become a major issue which the opposition parties are using to win voters.

However with so many disunited parties in the game, we can only dream of a united front to defeat UMNO.

Sabahans already suffered from the tragic takeover by UMNO of the Sabah government and some 15 years of UMNO plunder not to mention the plunder of the past 30 years of our oil resources. So do we still want another 50 years of this sham independence and progress (regress)?

All genuine opposition parties must unite for the interest of Sabah. By gaining power in Sabah we are empowered to demand from the Federal colonial government control over our resource revenues and taxes which we can use for Sabah development and not drained out to develop Malaya.

It looks like we voters need to put more pressure on them to unite to fight the election and not each other. Whether you are a member of SAPP or STAR you must pressurize your local member to work with the other party and draw up a common programme.

Sabah opposition can jointly draw up a set of common demands such as solution of the illegals, claim for oil revenue, land grab problems and general lack of “development” which they could use to gain advantage for Sabah. Such demands must be backed up by the one effective bargaining chip – that is failure to deliver will be followed up by campaign to take Sabah out of Malaysia!

Sabahans it is time to flex our muscles!

    2. How can SAPP work with PKR after their blatant rejection towards Malaya parties like PKR. They even told the people to be wary of the Malayan parties. If you are PKR, would you accept SAPP? There is no sincerity at all.

  5. Yong you cannot beat BN without working with PR. A lot of local parties that were set up just because election is near. Can we trust them? Have u forgot batu Sapi by election? Didn't u learned a lesson by going solo with teaming up? Making us fear of Malayan party will not make you a local hero. It only show how shallow your mindset n selfishness. Work with other opposition party and not split the votes. BN is too strong for SAPP.

  6. PR can keep on dreaming to become Federal government with their stupid idiots incompetence Sabah leaders.

SAPP already declare that to support PR to form federal government and PR should support SAPP to form Sabah government. What else PR Sabah want?

The problems now was in Sabah PR themselves which consisted with a bunch of opportunists and want to wallop everything.

I would not be surprised PR will eat ZERO again in this coming GE13.

  14. Those party from Malaya must be rejected in this coming GE13 like UMNO and PR. They came to Sabah to rob and steal our nature resource which is a fact.

People of Sabah should stay united to support our local Sabah opposition SAPP to take over Sabah government from party malaya who messed up Sabah with illegal immigrants, lands grabbed and made Sabah the Poorest in Malaysia.

SAPP is the only opposition party in Sabah who has economic plan and reformasi tanah plan for Sabah but not like those party kaki lima DAP and PKR got no idea on how to develop and make Sabah to be a prosperous place.

PR and UMNO both are the same. Party to colonize Sabah!

What is your ulterior motive behind it? It seems like PR Sabah politikus want SAPP to remain in BN so that you could grab all the seats in Sabah eh?

Furthermore, what make you think that your Party malaya PR politikus in Sabah are not opportunists? PR Sabah from Ansari, thamrin, jimmy wong, hiew king chiew and Fred fung named all are tainted with opportunists politikus. I will never trust these bunch of rubbishes!
