Missteps that led to taming of KDMs

Raymond Tombung

The late Sabah chief minister Fuad (Donald) Stephens while a visionary had underestimated the seeds of Malay supremacy taking root in Sabah in the 1970s.

Once upon a time the Kadazandusun and Muruts (KDMs) of Sabah had a powerful vision. They saw a new world, a bright future in which they would be the political kingmakers and the architects of their destiny.

Fuad (Donald) Stephens had this vision in the pre-independence days of the 1950s. He saw the raw qualities of the North Borneo societies as potential ingredients for a future political formula in which the natives will become self-reliant and independent.

Stephens saw the rich heritage of the KDMs and that with the injection of external inputs of knowledge and skills, and the support of the Chinese, this “body of heritage” would be solidified into a powerful force.

He felt that this powerful force would transform North Borneo into a rich and stable nation.

But many missteps dealt deadly blows to this vision. The mission went awry.

Stephens’ first mistake was to condemn the term “Dusun” as a derogatory name suited only for gullible country yokels.

In his eagerness to unite his people he underestimated the Dusun pride. To his utter astonishment, all the arguments for Kadazanism didn’t work.

Instead, they triggered the rise of Dusunism and Murutism, two nationalistic spirits that morphed into Pasok Momogun whose influence then swept throughout the land from Kudat, Bandau, Kota Belud, Ranau, Tambunan to the interiors which covered Keningau and Tenom.

Umno’s long reach

The blows against Stephens’ United National Kadazan Organisation (Unko), whose support centred in the Kadazan areas of Penampang and Papar, were strong and unstoppable.

It forced Stephens to go to Bingkor, with his large delegation, putting up for a night at the Rumah Besar, to offer reconciliation to the Gunsanad brothers – Sedomon and Sundang – hence the combination of Unko and Pasok Momogun to form “Upko”.

Stephens’ second misstep was to ignore Tun Mustapha Harun’s offer of political collaboration under one party.

The confidence with Unko, and later Upko, was understandable given the political climate of the time.

Stephens had underestimated the seeds of Malay supremacy which had began to take root.

The long hand of Umno-Kuala Lumpur inevitably intervened, manifesting in the mission of Syed Kechik Syed Mohamad to Sabah, to ensure the ascendancy of Mustapha to power.

But when Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) made a pact with Usno in 1985, it made the same error. PBS abandoned its pact, sending Mustapha into political wilderness.

It was in part a supposed payback for what was done to Stephens after the 1967 general election.
But you reap what you sow; the cycle of rewards and retributions tends to return past scores in equal measures.

Balance of power

However, there is agreement on one point: the KDMs then had a fighting spirit, and the willingness to take risks for the sake of a vision.

But due to deadly blows sustained in a series of political repercussions, KDMs now seem to have lost most of this spirit.

Tamed to a corner, KDM parties in BN see this as the age of compromise, of co-operation, of give and take, of “constructive engagements”.

This conciliatory gesture is claimed to be a mark of strategic wisdom, but it should only be pursued for as long as it does not obliterate the vision for a better future.

Many KDM leaders in BN rationalise that the current political balance of power makes combative political approach unwise.

But that in itself is a miscalculation of what determined Malaysians can do to transform the nation.

To relent and say, “What else can we do?” shows the defeatist attitude of KDM and a glaring lack of political creativity.

With that stance, there is no more vision. Without vision, the future is dead.

“Where there is no vision, there is no hope,” said George Washington Carver , and indeed without a vision, the KDMs are dead!

  3. THE BIGGEST MISTAKE ANY SABAH OR SARAWAK LEADERS EVER MADE WAS THE UNFORGIVABLE ERROR OF JUDGEMENT IN BEING CO-OPTED INTO CREATION THE NEO-COLONIAL CREATION "MALAYSIA"

For all his “grand vision” and "mis-steps" Donald Stephens main error was to lead Sabah into what we all now see as the hell-hole called "Malaysia" and we were just forced to trade the old for the new colonial master.

This may have also led to his early unexpected appalling end over Sabah skies.

Yet our sympathies must be with the man despite his errors for he did stand up for Sabah to the end and paid for it with his life (including other patriots).

It was his resistance to UMNO demands for Sabah to surrender its petroleum rights to Malaya that sealed his death warrant in the Double 6 tragedy (triple six as some see it being 6/6/(7)6).

Suspicions are now reinforced more strongly after Tengku Razaleigh's revelation that Harris Salleh pulled him and one other out of the air plane that was carrying Stephens before the take off. Why? Was there some skulduggery here? (May be everyone should have been suspicious and got out of the plane then!)

Yes in hindsight Stephens should have united with Tun Mustapha and formed a strong pro-Sabah united front against Kuala Lumpur machinations and interventions locally.

Tun Mustapha was harshly judged in the past for promoting self-interest and allowing the entry of illegals as he did but it appears he had defended Sabah rights and was replaced by UMNO using Stephens.

Perhaps Stephens could have refused the "honour" but somehow the ego of the man did not allow the opportunity go by. Sad.

The sudden death of Stephens opened the way for UMNO to install its “yes man” seizuere of Sabah oil and Malay supremacist programme of Malay-nization and misused of Islam to Islamized Sabah with mass transmigration of illegals.

We are most unfortunately still stuck in the Malaysia political mire when we know that the Malaysia Agreement was nullified by Malaya's unilateral act of sacking Singapore without consulting Sabah or Sarawak.

And there is nothing to stop us from taking Sabah Sarawak out of Malaysia!

And there is nothing to stop us from taking Sabah Sarawak out of Malaysia!

The original concept was already drastically changed when the Brunei Sultan wisely kept Brunei out of the equation.

This simply destroyed all the absurd British/Malayan false arguments, shibboleths and chicanery used to justify their racial balance, economic control, foreign invasion and communist scares reasons used to ensnare Sabah and Sarawak political leaders of the time to bring the 2 colonies under UMNO rule.

The ordinary people hardly mattered at the time as the British were keen to ditch their colonial possessions (it was really "to hell with democracy") even though they came out in their thousands to oppose "Malaysia" and in the face of the anti-Malaysia Uprising and following guerilla war of independence.

There is ABSOLUTELY nothing of benefit for us to remain in Malaysia as it is clear as daylight that Malaya UMNO needs Sabah and Sarawak resources and votes to stay in power more than they ever need Malaya!

Why should we become impoverish ourselves for the benefit of Malayan development and UMNO?

The Malayan colonialists have breached all aspects of the Malaysia Agreement and 20 Points with Sabah and the 18 Points with Sarawak in its failure to comply with the terms of federation. This plus the fact that the Agreement is not even binding as it was nullified by Singapore's exit in 1965.

Sabah and Sarawak should be the ones to dictate to KL not the other way but as it is many politicians have been on the take and are got by their political balls by Kuala Lumpur and can always be squeeze hard to work with Kuala Lumpur.

But there is no use wondering over the "if" and "perhaps" since UMNO has committed its many political socio-economic crimes against Sabah and Sarawak and is in de fact occupation of the 2 colonies.

The way forward is how to SHORTEN our jail time in Malaysia so we can break the colonial chains and free ourselves for Sabah national independence.

To this end Sabahans must unite with Sarawakians to form a solid united front to get Sabah and Sarawak out of Malaysia.
