SAPP - Sabah tour guides know better


KOTA KINABALU - Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) said there is no need to employ Korean nationals to act as tour guides for Korean tourists coming to Sabah.

SAPP Youth Chief Edward Dagul said the Koreans have been coming over to Sabah for many years and enjoy the beauty of the Land Below the Wind without problem.

"Why is there now a need to engage Korean nationals to act as tour guides for Korean tourists?

"The presence of local Sabah Tourist Guide Association (STGA) approved member should suffice as to provide the knowledge of places of interests and so on and if the tourist group is from a non English speaking nation, then maybe an interpreter is necessary," he said after a meeting with senior officials of the STGA here.

Also present were Luyang Assemblywoman cum SAPP Women Chief Melanie Chia and SAPP Secretary-General Datuk Richard Yong.

The meeting was to further find out the reasons for the recent furor on the Tourism Ministry's decision to allow Koreans to provide their own tourist guides.

Edward said as an integral part of the tourism industry, the association STGA should have a more meaningful role for the betterment of the industry. To this end, Sabah Tourism Board should include STGA's officials as members.

"As a local party advocating autonomy, SAPP empathises with the Association. STGA has contributed immensely to the growth of tourism in Sabah. It is only right to help solve problems faced by these local tour guides instead of sidelining them further by engaging foreign nationals to fill in their shoes.

"Why was the Federal Tourism Minister seemingly determined to bypass our locals?" he asked.

He said it would be better for the ministry to look for ways to assist and develop the tourism industry further in Sabah rather than creating more problems.

"Even if the Federal Ministry has the power to grant foreign guides with Malaysian tour guide licences," he argued that "we hope the State Government would not succumb to Ng Yen Yen's nonsense by granting work permits of this nature."

"While the number of unemployed youths in Sabah being recorded at more than 72,000 and increasing, the government should instead focus and find ways to help reduce unemployment.

    Tourist guides in Sabah need to take up the challenge to have more Korean-speaking tour guides. In this way, they will not have to worry about Koreans taking over their livelihood.

      State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said local tourist guides needed to look at the issue objectively rather than emotionally when addressing the problem.

      He was referring to the decision of the Tourism Ministry to allow Koreans to be employed as tour guides in Sabah as a temporary measure in view of the shortage of guides here who could speak the language.

      Betul juga bantahan untuk membawa pemandu pelancong dari Korea untuk Sabah. Tapi mungkin ada penjelasan mengenai perkara ini.

      keutamaan harus diberikan kepada pemandu pelancong tempatan dan bukannya kepada asing...bagaimana jika negara itali, jerman dll negara bukan berbahasa inggeris mahu pemnadu pelancong dari negara mereka di bawa masuk dan bekerja di malaysia khususnya sabah? sudah tentu ini akan mengugat peluang pekerjaan rakyat tempatan...skop yang lebih besar harus diteliti dan bukannya dalam jangka masa pendek...

    Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said that they were temporarily allowing Koreans to take up local tour guide courses so that they could be employed as tour guides here.

      This was being done while the Sabah Tourist Guide Association (STGA) work on providing more Korean-speaking local tour guides.

      In the first half of this year, 48,000 Korean tourists visited Sabah while for last year, the figure was 36,000.

      keputusan sementara..bermaksud tiada penyelesaian yang berkesan...sama juga..harap kerajaan lebih tegas dalam mempertahankan kepentingan pemandu pelancong tempatan kerana inilah saja punca pendapatan mereka untuk memberi makan kepada anak2..

      kelas2 bahasa asing harus diwujudkan dengan lebih banyak untuk pemandu pelancong tempatan...subsidi kelas bahasa juga harus diberikan...syarikat2 perlancongan tempatan juga harus mewajibkan pemandu pelancong mereka menguasai sekurang-kurangnya 3 bahasa asing selain inggeris...

    Korean should only be brought in as a translator instead. They will help to translate from English (language that is widely spoken by the local tourist guide) to Korean language.

    sebelum ini pelancong korea sendiri yang mengadu dan minta diberikan kelonggaran untuk membawa pemandu pelancong mereka sendiri.. so, bukankah ini menunjukkan pemandu pelancong tempatan sudah fail menarik pelancong korea ini??
