Pakatan wants 50 out of 60 state seats

COMMENT - Pakatan Rakyat (PR) has officially excluded Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) from seat negotiations on Sabah’s opposition front, PKR’s Azmin Ali has confirmed, claiming the party’s demands are too unreasonable to accommodate.

With SAPP out of the seat negotiations, Pakatan can now have all the 576 state seats to contest for the whole of Malaysia for themselves, ironically claiming that SAPP's demands for half of the Sabah state seats of 60 (that is 30 seats) are unreasonable.

Pakatan had wanted the lion's share of state seats while only offering 10 for SAPP to contest.

SAPP, a nearly two-decade-old party led by former Sabah chief minister Datuk Yong Teck Lee, had earlier agreed to collaborate with PR in Election 2013 to topple BN from its east Malaysian fortress, but has been insisting that local parties must contest the lion’s share of the 60 seats in the state’s legislative assembly.

Yong said the peninsula-based PR can contest the majority of Sabah’s 25 federal seats to help its bid for Putrajaya but maintained that administrative power over the state must stay in the hands of parties with roots in Sabah.

He said that this would be in keeping with the state’s right to autonomy as enshrined in the 1963 Malaysia Agreement.

But Azmin told The Malaysian Insider that Yong’s demand for 40 or even half the state’s 60 seats was unreasonable while in fact, the number was reduced by SAPP to half of 60 ie. 30 seats. Azmin must have or intentionally missed the part.

Earlier on, SAPP Youth Chief Edward Dagul told Pakatan not to breach but to honour its pledge during the "Kuching Declaration" in Kuching, Sarawak.

The three main parties of Pakatan Rakyat had on Sep 16, 2012 launched "Kuching Declaration" to declare that Pakatan will restore Sarawak and Sabah's status equal to that Peninsular Malaysia and to safeguard the two States' political interests. It also emphasized on equal representation and autonomy. The declaration was jointly signed by PKR's leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, DAP's YB Lim Kit Siang and PAS president YB Hadi Awang.

Among others, the declaration's Article 1 promises " We will restore the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement and the position of Sarawak and Sabah as equal partners within Malaysia by restoring autonomy to Sarawak and Sabah within the framework of the Federal Constitution".

Under Article 2 on "Fair representation", the declaration promises to "increase national integration between Sarawak, Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia through power-sharing arrangement that fully upholds the spirit of Malaysia Agreement".

With SAPP and Star excluded from the seats negotiation, Pakatan will become wholly Malayan-controlled party coalition without Sabah local-based parties as allies, now having total control over whatever seats they want to control without regard nor respect for the home parties and Sabah territory as equal partners.

  1. SAPP is disintegrating and the only chance of survival is to put up as many candidates as possible in the GE.This is the promise of its leaders and the expectations of its members without which they will start looking for political shelters somewhere else.On their own they know they will be whitewashed by other parties contesting. They can't even win a single seat so now they are pushing Pakatan to accept them.Pakatan is fully aware of their manoeuvres and before they become a pain in the arse they are booted out first.Well done Pakatan! Now lets see how SAPP members will react.Pathetic!

  2. IF SAPP & STAR DO NOT UNITE- PAKATAN WILL TAKE OVER BY DEFAULT.

It is important that SAPP and STAR resist PAKATAN attempts to assert Malayan domination of the local opposition as it has does in Sarawak.

UMNO is happy for Pakatan to take over the Sabah Sarawak opposition parties as this will consolidate the complete Malayan control over our 2 countries.

The 18/20 Points Agreements with Malaya will become even less meaningful because Pakatan like UMNO has promised to integrate Sabah Sarawak more closely with Malaya.

In order for Sabah to keep out foreign Malayan interference they must at all cost unite against the alien parties like UMNO and Pakatan.

SAPP and STAR must put aside their differences. They must compromise and share the seats 12/12 over safe or winnable seats and contest the remaining seat in a constituency where neither has dominance. The Parties can share the Chief Ministership if they gain power.

Do it for Sabah and don't let the opportunity slip by for another 50 years.

Use the opportunity to re-assert Sabah independence to keep out alien Malayan domination.

  36. It's hard to believe that just eight months ago Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was crowing as though his Sabah quest was as good as done. He had a secured two mid-ranking defectors and only had to complete a deal with SAPP to finish the job.

    ReplyDelete
  37. For a man like Anwar, who places more faith in gaining power by defection than he does by formulating policies and winning voter trust, they were exciting times.

    ReplyDelete
  38. They were also, as it now turns out, a total illusion because the elusive deal that has tormented Anwar for months is now dead and buried. PKR's Azmin Ali has Saturday announced that Pakatan Rakyat and SAPP couldn't come to a deal on seat sharing in the state.

    ReplyDelete
  39. "I am not blaming them for anything, simply that their demands are unreasonable," Azmin said.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Don't be fooled by Azmin's matter-of-fact language. He might pretend that losing the affiliation with SAPP is not a big deal but make no mistake - this is the one that got away. For one thing, of course, SAPP used to be BN-aligned and that alone gave it trophy status in Anwar's eyes.

    ReplyDelete
  41. After all, Anwar performed an impromptu cabaret act last July when he secured the services of Tuaran MP Datuk Seri Wilfred Mojilip Bumburing and former Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin. But SAPP is bigger than two men, it is a fully-formed political party with an identity in Sabah.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The issue, which ended any hope of a deal was said to be SAPP's greed. The party reportedly demanded it field candidates in eight federal seats and 40 of the sixty state seats. Why it thought it deserved so many, given that it won just two and four respectively in 2008 is anyone's guess. Ultimately it was Anwar's job to manage those expectations but he failed to do so. Remember, Anwar doesn't do tough conversations does he? He's more of a back-slapping man.

    ReplyDelete
  43. In fact, Anwar actively inflamed the problem by publicly speculating that SAPP is not as "formidable" as it believes. This infuriated SAPP President and founder Yong Teck Lee and, as we now know, the relationship between the two didn't recover.

    ReplyDelete
  44. The collapse of the SAPP deal leaves Anwar in a pickle in Sabah. He still has to dole out seats to Bumburing's APS and Lajim's PPPS – their loyalty doesn't come for free – but it is now too late to come up with another strategy to win the state in time for GE13. What would he do, go to the voters and say: We never really believed in SAPP, now how about I sell you some policies? That opportunity, like the SAPP deal, is also dead.

    ReplyDelete
  45. And Anwar's problems in Sabah are still mounting up. Thursday witnessed the resignations by 14 Sabah Wanita PKR members, with dissatisfaction over the number of seats PKR will have to cede to APS and PPPS said to be the driving issue. Some of those women had hoped to be contesting assembly seats or even federal seats at GE13 and now they have been dumped in favour of Anwar's preferred defectors. It's all a total mess really.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Last year, when Anwar was on one of his forays to East Malaysia, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak also found himself there on the same weekend. What they said and did speaks volumes about both men. Anwar was in Sabah, again crowing about defections and laughing at the guaranteed demise of BN in the state. Najib was in Sarawak, standing in the rain, turning the first sod for a new university and talking about education and development.

    ReplyDelete
  47. In other words, one man was trying to get power the easy way and the other was engaging potential voters the correct way – listening to their concerns, and then spelling out policies and spending plans that will change lives not just in the next parliamentary term, but in the next decade.

    ReplyDelete
  48. The SAPP Sabah sideshow is now thankfully over. Anwar has been rebuffed, but it is unlikely that he has learned anything valuable from the experience.

    ReplyDelete
