Kit Siang likened as Pope by DAP is an insult to Catholics

KOTA KINABALU: DAP Sabah Chief Jimmy Wong has come under fire for equating his boss cum DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang, to the Pope.

Taking him to task was Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) wanita chief Melanie Chia, who considered it as grossly inappropriate and an insult to the Catholics in the country, and demanded for a public apology from him.

She expressed both regret and disbelief that Wong had deemed fit to extol and worship his political boss (Kit Siang) to the extent of equating the later to the Pope, who is the supreme leader of worldwide Catholic Church.

Melanie was commenting on Wong’s remark in an exclusive interview by a local Chinese newspapers, in which he had said that being the supreme leader of DAP, Kit Siang is like the Pope, hence there are many people (in Sabah) who adore him and would like to meet up with him. He quipped that this doesn’t mean that the Bishops in Sabah are not popular enough, but it’s just that the aura of a national or world leader is different.

“Such is an insensitive and obnoxious remark. It is tantamount to an insult and a challenge to the Pope’s sacred position and authority. He is not fit to be a leader. He should apologise to the Catholics in the country,” she said.

Melanie who is also Luyang State assemblywoman added that no leader who worth his or her salt would make such an insensitive and insulting remark just to butter his political master.

She quipped that Wong probably did that out of desperation to ensure that he gets to be fielded as a candidate again, in this coming general election.

“I’m quite sure that he (Wong) must have sent the said news clipping to DAP Headquarters for Kit Siang to read, with the hope that he would get to re-contest in the coming general election,” she quipped.

She contended that what the people need is a leader who truly has the people’s interest and wellbeing at heart, and not one who has no qualms of worshiping his or her political masters like gods, in order to be in their good book, always.

Melanie also refuted Wong’s claim in the said interview that he left SAPP due to differences in their struggle for the state and its people but, because he realized that he could no longer benefit from SAPP since its President Datuk Yong Teck Lee is no longer the Chief Minister of Sabah.

Describing Wong as an opportunist, she pointed out that after leaving SAPP Wong subsequently joined the Bersekutu which was led by another former Chief Minister of Sabah, Tan Sri Harris Salleh, in order to fulfill his dream of becoming an elected representative.

But, in the 1999 general elections, he only managed to poll a miserable 481 votes against the winner Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat of Barisan Nasional (BN) who garnered 6,935 votes.

Wong later left Bersekutu to join the DAP and subsequently contested under its ticket and won the Sri Tanjong seat in the last general elections.

In 2011, he succeeded in ousting his one-time close ally Dr Hiew King Cheu to become the Sabah DAP chief.

Wong also earned his nickname as a ‘setengah-tiang YB’ (half-past-six elected representative) when he proclaimed this in one of the sittings of the State Legislative Assembly.

Those who knew him well, including some senior reporters, had described him as a ‘slapstick politician’.

He also got into trouble when his ‘Anak Negeri’ (Native) status was revoked by the State Native Council, after they found his status to be questionable.

This was following the Sekong State assemblyman Datuk Samsudin Yahya questioning of the authenticity of his Native status.

Wong however responded by filing for a judicial review of such a decision and the case is currently still pending in the High Court.

Kit Siang is a gentleman politician, but how low would people like this Wong character stoop to idolise their leader.

  5. Seharusnya Allah lah yang patut dipertahankan bukan Lim Guan Eng,sebaliknya PAS sanggup berbohong kepada umat Islam didalam ceramah mereka kononnya Guan Eng bukan kristian semata mata mahu mempertahankan ultrakiasu chauvanis rasis ini. Kemudian Umno dipersalahkan kononnya sengaja memainkan sentimen rasis dan kebencian agama.Begitulah jahatnya PAS dan haprak pakatan.

  8. ADUN Luyang Melanie Chia expressed disbelief that DAP is so insensitive to Christians in Sabah and wants an apology from the DAP chief. This is the level of political maturity in DAP Sabah, which will stoop to any level to gain publicity. Reject DAP for belittling the Catholic church and new Pope Francis.
