Sabah RCI: Muslim inter-marriage with foreigners in Sabah on the rise
KOTA KINABALU - Muslim inter-marriages between locals in Sabah and foreigners have been increasing since 2000, numbering almost 20,000 marriages for the past 13 years, the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on illegal immigrants heard today.
Baharuddin Alwi, chief registrar of marriage from the Sabah Islamic Affairs Department, testified today that there were 8,859 Muslim marriages between foreign men and local women in Sabah from 2000 to October 2012, as well as 10,922 Muslim marriages between foreign women and local men in the same period, totalling 19,781 marriages.
“Most of the foreign wives are Indonesian and Filipinos,” Baharuddin told the RCI here today.
He added that foreign husbands included Filipinos, Afghans, Algerians and Bangladeshis.
“The increase in the number of population is because foreigners marry the locals,” said conducting officer Datuk Azmi Ariffin, explaining the relevance of Baharuddin’s testimony to the RCI’s term of reference on the social impact of immigrants in Sabah.
About 28 per cent of Sabah’s 3.2 million-strong population are foreigners, totalling a whopping 889,000 people.
