PETALING JAYA - A Proton car has been used as a car bomb in a video purportedly filmed in Syria.
The three-minute thirty-one second video uploaded to YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGsz5ScFVz8) shows a man setting up four improvised explosive devices (IED) in a Proton Saga BLM in the back seat of the car.
The IEDs were set up to be remotely detonated and the car was also set up to be steered remotely.
The man in the video drives the car part of the way before abandoning it and leaving it to be remotely driven to a site where the IEDs in the car were then triggered.
The explosion shown is quite a big one.
The location is purportedly somewhere in Syria where there has been an armed conflict since 2011.
The Proton Saga BLM was launched in 2008 and Proton has been selling cars in Syria since 2001.
Sources revealed that the authorities had not received any report of a Malaysian car, let alone a Proton Saga, being used by militants in Syria.
“There is no significance in using a Proton. The militants can easily use any car. They don’t have to use a Proton,” the source said.
However, the source said authorities were not discounting the fact that the militants were trying to discredit Malaysia by using a Proton Saga.
