Video of street fight at Keningau fish market goes viral (updated)

A man with a fish skimmer chasing a group of men in the video
KENINGAU - A video of a street fight allegedly between locals and foreigners in Sabah’s interior Keningau town is causing a stir.

The 23-second video, believed to have been filmed close to the town’s fish market on Sunday, shows a group of men being chased by a person armed with a fish skimmer.

The video also depicts another man lying face down on the ground and being kicked by another individual in the face.

The injured man is then seen lifting his head up for a moment before falling back down to the ground.

The cameraman did not appear to be involved in the fight and might have been hiding from the fracas.

It not clear what sparked the fight.

The video has been passed around on social media and messaging service WhatsApp.

Story behind.....

Trio injured by group of foreigners at Keningau fish market

District police chief DSP Robert Salisip @ David, who confirmed the incident yesterday, said it happened at about 5.30pm on June 1 at the Public Market here.

He said  one of the victims, Cyril Linus, 20, from Kampung Mamagun Dalit Sook, was slashed with a machete on the left elbow and received five stitches.

“Another victim, Analem Tony Malip, 31, from the same village, sustained facial injuries after he fell on the road while escaping.

“The third victim, Manayoh Raw Palamok, 39, from Kampung Binanon Nabawan, was wounded on the left side of the head above the ears after being slashed with a machete,” he said.

Robert said Manayoh received 11 stitches and is currently warded at Keningau Hospital in stable condition while doctors are monitoring him.

During the incident, Cyril lost his MyKad, MayBank and CIMB Bank ATM Cards, BSN and ASB account books and driving licence while fleeing from the attackers.

“The third victim was injured was attacked by a group of seven or eight men armed with sharp objects such as machetes, iron and wood.

“Initial police investigation found that the cause of the incident was due to a misunderstanding between one of Cyril’s relatives and members of the group,” said Robert.

Cyril had been with the group in a karoake shop here near Public Market since 3pm that day drinking alcohol with four invited women, he said.

One of the men had hit Cyril’s relative outside the shop. The relative later told Cyril who was having a drink at the shop. Cyril then together with Analem and Manayoh chased the suspected man, who ran towards the Public Market.

When Cyril, Analem and Manayoh arrived at the Public Market, they saw a group of men waiting for them.

They managed to flee, but Cyril was slashed in the hand and Analem fell down during the escape while Manayoh fell and was slashed multiple times on the head.

Following the incident, Robert said the police have arrested a 34-year-old suspect from Mile 6 Jalan Keningau-Nabawan who worked as a fishmonger.

He said the suspect, a foreigner, has been remanded for further action, while efforts were in progress to track the other involved suspects.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting.
