Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) Deputy President Melanie Chia congratulated TAG2 for organising the dialogue on the Tanjung Aru Development this afternoon as this is a good sign and reflect well on the civil society in Kota Kinabalu.
The dialogue this afternoon also gave hope that the massive reclamation and development in Tg Aru is not a foregone conclusion especially when the Terms of Reference for the Environmental Impact Studies (TOR for EIA) has not yet been approved as informed by the developer's consultants. It is good to know that nobody can be above the law.
She reminded that the Chief Minister had in previous occasions said (in and outside the state assembly) that there will be no more seafront reclamation. He should not eat his own words now! She reiterated again that we are not against development.
The government can by all means develop the old Borneo Hotel site and other titled land but, please leave the foreshore reserve and the seafront as it is.
Melanie said, let Tg Aru Beach reminds as one of the most beautiful beach in the world, especially at sun set.
Melanie cautioned again about the voluminous sand-fill required for the seafront reclamation quoted in the TOR of the EIA at 17 million cubic metre. The source of such a large volume of sand in inside is a problem she said.
