Cops who force singer to sing in lockup suspended

PETALING JAYA - The two police officers who forced a popular 90's band vocalist to sing while in handcuffs and lockup, have been suspended.

Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) director Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Zubaidah Md Ismail said Saturday that the department has launched an investigation on those involved, after a video singer Zamani Ibrahim being forced to sing in handcuffs went viral on social media.

"The Inspector-General of Police has given the department the green light to remove the officers who were involved in the matter from active duty, pending an investigation.

"We are not just questioning them but their supervisors as well, as to how a lapse in police procedure could occur.

“We are investigating this from all angles," said SDCP Zubaidah.

She declined to reveal the two officers' ranks, but said that stern action would be taken against them if they have been found to have flouted the Civil Service Rules (service and conduct) 1993.

SDCP Zubaidah added that the force would not tolerate bad apples within its midst who mistreat detainees and said she was ‘ashamed’ of the actions of the two officers.

Zamani, 43, was arrested on Wednesday for alleged involvement in drug abuse at his house in Taman Keramat, Ampang.

He was arrested with a 32-year-old woman for allegedly possessing a plastic bag containing what is believed to be 1.2g of heroin.

The video, which is believed to have been recorded soon after Zamani was arrested showed the former lead singer of ’90s band Slam singing Gerimis Mengundang, one of the band’s hit songs, while handcuffed.

The video has gone viral on the social media and has spurred calls for police to investigate the matter.
