Man who damaged statues of deities fined RM3,000 ...

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The Sessions Court today fined a man RM3,000 in default of three months jail for damaging the statues of deities about two weeks ago.

Bukit Mertajam Sessions Court judge M. Vijayalakshmi fined Mohd Firdaus Said, 28, after he pleaded guilty.

He was charged with damaging two statues of deities and an altar where joss sticks and an urn was placed at Wat Chantararam Thai Buddhist Temple here about 10.10am on Jan 2.

Injuring or defiling a place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class is an offence under the Penal Code.

Offenders are liable to a maximum two year prison sentence, with fine, or both.

He nodded his head to indicate that he understood the charge when it was read out to him by the court interpreter.

Mohd Firdaus, who was unrepresented, requested the court released him under supervision adding that he did not have enough money to pay the fine.

DPP Lim Saw Sim prosecuted the case.
