Racist provocateur Ali Tinju previously part of 'butt exercise' protest

PETALING JAYA - Mohd Ali Baharom, detained in relation to the Low Yat Plaza brawl, is an ex-army man who gained notoriety after performing a "butt exercise" protest in front of lawyer S. Ambiga's house in 2012.

The 44-year-old, who is also known as Ali Tinju, together with several other former army personnel, staged the protest in response to the Bersih 3 rally.

He later threatened to hold a demonstration in front of Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamalluddin for criticising his actions, but did not go ahead with it.

Mohd Ali is now a businessman and the president of Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association.

The association has been criticised by many - especially other veteran army associations - for making controversial statements.

Mohd Ali, who hails from Malacca, is also the coordinator for the Gabugan NGO 1Malaysia secretariat.

He claimed to be an Umno branch leader on his Facebook page but did not specify which branch. He claimed he had been a loyal Umno member since 2008, but his exact involvement in Umno is uncertain.

Mohd Ali had also been sighted at the "Nothing2Hide" public dialogue venue on June 5, which was cancelled due to security reasons.

Mohd Ali was arrested on Tuesday after videos surfaced of him allegedly making seditious statements outside Low Yat Plaza to a group of protestors on Sunday night.

Mohd Ali announced his arrest on his Facebook page and apologised for not being able to celebrate Hari Raya with his family and friends.
