Sabah police commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said the expansion was urgently needed as Beluran is a tourist and research destination following the existence of Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area (SIMCA).
In announcing this, he said the 28th curfew phase which includes the new district would start tomorrow and end on Oct 8.
“I have discussed the matter with the Prime Minister and the Inspector General of Police, and they have agreed on this.
“SIMCA includes three islands namely Lankayan, Tegaipil and Billean. Over 100 European foreigners go to these islands every month to carry out exploration and research,” he said in a press conference.
“Several individuals who are managing SIMCA have actually come to me personally and they wanted the area to be included in the curfew,” he added.
Prior to the expansion, the curfew area covered an area of 121,270 NM2 that included six districts – Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Lahad Datu, Kunak, Tawau, and Semporna.
Jalaluddin said the many entry points through the three islands (Lankayan, Tegaipil and Billean) made it necessary for security forces to monitor movement of people and boats in Beluran.
