Devious street vendors caught on video spraying food colouring onto shrimp
KOTA KINABALU - Street vendors here have been spraying food colouring onto dried shrimp to make the food items appear “fresh” before packaging and selling them to customers.
This tactic, used by vendors at Sinsuran, was caught on camera by a Facebook user, who promptly shared the video of her findings on social media.
The video has since gone viral, garnering over 1,300 shares. Netizen expressed their rage and disgust at the tactics and demanded that the authorities take action against the unscrupulous traders.
Kota Kinabalu City Hall immediately swung into action and following checks, caught the two vendors red-handed. KK City Hall enforcement director Abdul Mukti Muchlish said the food colouring used by the vendors was permitted.
However, he noted that the pair had deceived customers and said the case will be referred to the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry
“They will be brought to the court and if convicted, will be sentenced to four hours community service.”
