KOTA KINABALU - The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) here on Saturday launched its district-level Voluntary Reserve Team.
Officiated by its Kota Kinabalu Director, maritime commodore Adam Aziz, the event held at the agency's premises involved 174 volunteers comprising 18 officers and 156 personnel.
"It is set up on the approval of the Cabinet to assist the agency in its tasks. It will serve as a force multiplier in safeguarding the country's waters," he said.
Through their participation, he said, the volunteers would also gain a better understanding of MMEA's responsibilities and help to create greater rapport between the people and the agency.
He said the volunteers may also serve as "eyes and ears" in MMEA's efforts to combat crimes at sea.
