Umno's unilateral decisions a disrespect of BN consensus

PETALING JAYA - MCA has threatened to cut ties with Umno should it form an alliance with PAS without first discussing the matter with the Chinese-based party.

MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong said Umno or its president, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, cannot unilaterally make decisions on behalf of Barisan Nasional.

The former minister said that the coalition had always sought consensus among its component partners, adding that BN’s fate didn’t lie in “Umno’s hands alone”.

“If they cannot commit to mutual respect for their coalition partners as is expected and instead proceed to partner with PAS without prior discussions with MCA, then MCA will not hesitate to cut ties with Umno,” Wee said in a Facebook post, adding that it would be meaningless to work together if the two parties had different principles.

The Ayer Hitam MP was commenting on a news report quoting Zahid as saying that Umno would “uphold” PAS as its new political partner.

Zahid was reported to have said this at a meeting with leaders from the Islamist party.

Wee went on to remind Zahid that there is no future for a “mono-ethnic political path” and warned that his decision to work with PAS could see the demise of BN.

MCA, he said, would find its own path as they could not in “good conscience walk with him (Zahid) on this path of self-destruction”.

“We can only wish Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid all the best if he insists on forming an alliance with PAS.”

Wee had declared he would go for MCA’s top post after president Liow Tiong Lai took responsibility for MCA’s poor performance in GE14 and announced he would not defend his post during party elections next month
