The four escapees, who had been detained under Section 34 of the Immigration Act 1959/63, were Sanny Chuan, 21, Azlan Abu Bakar Sidik, 15, Talam Jafar, 27 and Faisal Hamsali, 36.
City police chief ACP Habibi Majinji said the Filipinos had been under remand for not possessing valid documents.
“The four are not dangerous detainees as portrayed. They were temporarily detained and waiting for their deportation date,” said Habibi in response to messages expressing worry in a public Sabah WhatsApp group.
Habibi said a report was received early Tuesday evening about the breakout.
“Investigation showed that in the 4.55pm incident, an on-duty security guard was opening a door to serve food to the detainees when the five Filipinos jumped on him and ran to the back of the facilities before climbing a 12-foot wire fence,” he said in a media update.
“The guard on duty in the block and guards from the other block gave chase and managed to apprehend one of them, Ibni Anani, 43.”
The case is being investigated under Sections 223 and 224 of the Penal Code for escaping detention and negligence leading to an inmate’s escape.
Police provided to the media mugshots of three of the escapees but not of the minor.
Investigation is ongoing and police are currently tracking the four Filipinos, said Habibi, adding those with information can contact city police hotline at 088-221 191 /529 211 - DE
