Troubled mall: University roped in

The authorities are in a quandry over whether or not to declare the popular Karamunsing Shopping Complex building as 'unsafe' following worrying reports of its 'structural integrity.'


KOTA KINABALU: As the controversy over the safety of the popular Karamunsing Shopping Complex continues to swirl around the massive renovation works which has changed the face of the building, the government has appointed a local university to undertake a study on the structural integrity of the building.

Is Karamunsing Complex safe?

Who are them to claim this building is safe?

Dr. Hiew together with the Sabah DAP Local Government and Housing Bureau chief Edward Ewol Mujie and the Tuaran DAP chief Peter Liew Fui Ken visited the complex, and they were met by the General Manager of the Complex Mr. Varan, who gave the MP a briefing over the 'concern of the people' on the complex.

The GM Mr. Varan reported that the complex is now having much improvement in terms of face lift, facilities, car parks, shop lots, services, security, and most important the businesses here are improving. Its condition now can not compare to the days with the company bought over the complex some five years ago. It has changed from a real bad shape to a lively shopping mall and office complex today. The management has a policy to buy back many of the units and renting it out to enhance good management. At the moment, they own 80% of all the units and floors.

Pairin orders Sabah PWD to probe Karamunsing complex

After a thorough discussion, the Sabah Cabinet wants the PWD to appoint an independent consultant for the project.


KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Cabinet has directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to appoint an independent consultant to do an assessment of the structural integrity of Karamunsing Complex.

Safety of popular shopping complex in doubt

Indiscriminate renovations and extensions have put a 'dangerous level of stress' on Kota Kinabalu's most popular shopping complex.
KOTA KINABALU: The “structural integrity” of one of the city’s top shopping spots, Karamunsing Complex, has come under scrutiny following concerns over the safety of the multi-storey building, which is under going renovation.
