BN parties jostling for extra MP seat

Joseph Bingkasan

All Sabah BN component parties are eyeing Sepanggar and claim they can wrest it from opposition SAPP, which won the seat with a 10,000 vote majority.

KOTA KINABALU: Four Barisan Nasional component members have thrown their hats in the ring to contest the Sepanggar parliamentary seat in the 13th general election.

Besides Umno, the United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko), Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) are all optimistic that they stand a chance to wrest the MP seat from Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP).

Incumbent MP Eric Majimbun won the seat for BN in the 2004 election and went on to retain it for the coalition in the 2008 general election but SAPP pulled out of the BN on Sept 17, 2008 after the ruling coalition came close to being toppled from power after losing its two-thirds parliamentary majority.

SAPP leader Yong Teck Lee was also once – in 1999 – the MP for the constituency, when it was known as Gaya. It is considered SAPP’s stronghold.

But national coalition government leaders are confident that Sepanggar which encompasses the state seats of Inanam and Karambunai is a BN stronghold and any component party candidate can win the seat back.

Upko was the first to stake a claim for the MP seat during the party divisional meeting in Kg Kokol, Menggatal in July last year.

Divisional chief Steven Kutai, a former assemblyman for Inanam assemblyman said that the party’s claim to the seat was based on the BN’s power sharing concept.

“Like other BN component parties, we’re stating the wish of all Upko members in Sepanggar.

“What’s important is that after a decision is made on the party to contest the seat, all the coalition members will be united to ensure the victory of the candidate.”

“That’s what Upko has been doing all this while to make sure Sepanggar will continue to be represented by the ruling party,” he said.

Umno ready to wrest Sepanggar

The Upko candidate on standby is supreme council and deputy divisional head Albert Bingkasan.

Upko is headed by federal minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Bernard Dompok.

Another potential contender is Umno Sepanggar head Jumat Arshad, who is also the constituency’s BN chairman.

Party workers have been laying the ground work for him over the past two years to stake Umno’s claim for the seat.

The Sabah Umno liaision committee deputy chairman Salleh Tun Said said as much earlier this month when he challenged Umno Sepanggar to wrest the MP seat from SAPP.

Jumat responded by saying that his division was not only ready to face Majimbun but would support any candidate from other BN components should the party’s leadership decide not to field him.

He reiterated this when he said the constituency is open to all BN component parties in reply to PBS president

Joseph Pairin Kitingan’s announcement on Sunday that PBS had filed an official application to the BN leadership for the party to nominate their candidate for the MP seat.

PBS supreme council and Karambunai division head William Majimbun is their candidate on stand-by.

Last month PBRS president Joseph Kurup had also said that he had instructed his party’s divisional leaders in Inanam and Sepanggar to work hard and evaluate the party’s chances in the constituency.

Kurup, who is federal Natural Resources and Environment deputy minister, said feedback was positive.

LDP wants it too

Apart from Upko, Umno, PBS and PBRS, another BN component party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) headed by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Liew Vui Keong also wants to be considered for the seat.

On the opposition side, apart from SAPP, the State Reform Party (STAR), Pakatan Rakyat component parties and independents are all eyeing the seat.

In the 1999 election Yong won the seat for SAPP garnering 15, 313 votes against PBS’ Johnny Goh, the current Inanam assemblyman, who polled 11,198 while PAS’s Hamzah Abdullah’s received 729 votes.

Majimbun defended the seat for the BN in 2004 and 2008 winning by a majority of more than 10,000 votes.

  20. Sepanggar is held by the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) which won the seat in the 2008 general election on a BN ticket.

The party pulled out of the coalition shortly after and the MP Datuk Eric Majimbun, is now an opposition elected representative.

Karambunai and Inanam remain BN strongholds, with Datuk Jainab Ahmad of Umno and Datuk Johnny Goh of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) as the elected representatives.

Salleh said it would not be a difficult task to take Sepanggar if Umno members gave their undivided support to the BN candidate in the next general election
