LABUAN - Member of parliament Datuk Yussof Mahal yesterday reiterated that his status as a bankrupt would be resolved soon.
Yussof was declared a bankrupt by the Labuan High Court on August 7, raising doubts among the islanders as to whether he is still the elected representative and chairman of Labuan Corporation.
When approached by The Borneo Post after attending a function at a resort, Yussof confided that his case was in the process of being cleared.
“I don’t want to comment any more on my case. The settlement process cannot be done in a day or two,” he responded.
Yesterday, Yussof was seen at the Labuan Corporation multi-purpose hall attending the Umno divisional meeting.
Dato’ Suhaili Abdul Rahman had earlier urged the government to clarify his successor’s status, whether he is still holding all his positions in Barisan Nasional in the light of the bankruptcy case.
Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia said last week that Yussof remains as Labuan MP as there is no revision of his status for now.
He said there had been no official notification to his office of the court’s bankruptcy order against Yussof.
Meanwhile, Labuan DAP chief Lau Seng Kiat has urged the Election Commission to hold a by-election for the Labuan parliamentary seat soonest without having to wait for for the general election to be held.
Lau claimed had the elected representative been a member of the opposition, he would have ethically stepped down from his position as soon as the bankruptcy declaration was issued.
Simsudin Hj Sidek, the PKR chief for Labuan, urged Yussof to resign from being a member of parliament as his bankruptcy had tarnished the mandate and trust given to him by the electorate.
