UPKO leaders had decided to leave Barisan Nasional, claims Maijol

KOTA KINABALU - Former United Pasokmomogun KadazanDusun Murut Organisation (UPKO) vice-president Datuk Maijol Mahap yesterday claimed that party leaders had decided to quit Barisan Nasional (BN) and join Pakatan Rakyat.

Maijol in a statement also claimed that it did not happen because Prime Minister cum BN chairman Datuk Sri Najib Tun Razak promised to make the announcement on the setting up of the Royal Commission of Inquiry on the illegal immigrant issue and extraordinary increase in Sabah’s population.

“For the record, initially UPKO leaders had decided and were prepared to bring UPKO out of BN and join PR. In fact, immediately before the function on July 29, 2012, there were suggestions coming from several UPKO leaders requesting Bumburing and his group to postpone their intended date to quit BN-UPKO.

“They eventually agreed to let Bumburing go first while UPKO leaders sort out some technicalities. However, all these notions suddenly changed when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib promised to announce the formation of RCI which would be made on August 11, 2012,” he said.

Maijol and Tuaran Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Bumburing along with a few of their loyal supporters quit BN on July 29 and announced their support for Pakatan Rakyat.

Bumburing, the former UPKO deputy president, then set up Angkatan Perubahan Sabah (APS), a movement of which Maijol is deputy chairman.

Majiol in his statement claimed that now UPKO found itself trapped by the announcement as until today, the members of the RCI have yet to sit.

“What would UPKO do or say should the RCI fail to complete its reports during the stipulated time given to it and/or in the midst of it, Najib dissolves Parliament and calls for election? Or perhaps the RCI might not even be able to sit for their first meeting before the general election is called?

“Would UPKO be prepared to go down and try to convince the rakyat to come and defend the failure of the government in solving this problem? I urge the people to seriously think about how their future and the future of their grandchildren would be like having illegal immigrant population outnumbering them in every aspect. Let the people be the judge,” he said.

Meanwhile, in response to UPKO president Tan Sri Bernard Dompok’s opinion that those who left BN are not confident in Pakatan Rakyat as they have yet to officially join any of its coalition members, Maijol was of the opinion that it was not accurate.

“It is not for anyone to say whether or not Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred has any confidence in any of the political parties that make up Pakatan Rakyat (PR). This is because it is not his priority to become a member of any of the PR component members.

“After going through several soul-searching discussions with several PR leaders, including Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, it was therefore agreed that the top priority of Bumburing and Datuk Seri Panglima Lajim Ukin through the respective platform that they have established, would be to fully assist Pakatan Rakyat in their quest to topple the BN government and wrest control of Putrajaya,” he explained.

In relation to this understanding, leaders from Angkatan Perubahan Sabah (APS) and Pakatan Perubahan Sabah (PPS) have been appointed as members of PR National Council.

“Unlike BN where Umno is the dominant force and all the other parties have to follow the dictates of Umno, Pakatan Rakyat is made of equal partners where no single party dominates the other members of the coalition,” Maijol said.

  1. Aiyohyoh, why tell now? We still want to leave BN when PM bubar Parliament for PRU-13. Now you spoil our secret, how to get money from BN for our election campaign before we leave? Now boss Gilok have to find other excuse to get money from BN for the elections. How to support you in KM now?

    1. If it is truly Sabah money, we don't need BN (dirty) money. Vote BN out to have control over it. You let outsiders get the better of everything don't expect to be dished out the best. Vote for autonomy.

    1. Presiden UPKO, Tan Sri Bernard Giluk Dompok, pernah menyuarakan pandangannya bahawa sistem kouta dalam BN menyebabkan sebahagian pemimpin parti dalam komponen BN menyertai parti lawan bagi merealisasikan niat mereka untuk bertanding.

  3. Bernard Dompok has questioned the reluctance of former Barisan Nasional leaders in officially joining a Pakatan Rakyat component party. Are they just shy about joining PKR, PAS or DAP? Why the need to set up movements and aspire to use one of the PR component parties’ logo but not join that party.

    1. if APS and PPS will get more ADUN then Lajim will be the CM and Bumburing the deputy, Maijol bagi menteri pun ok dah. masalahnya Yong Teck dan Gapari pun mau jadi CM juga. masih agak lintang pukang sikit percatuan mereka.

  4. I think they have their own agenda. Either Bumburing nor Lajim, both of them want to be the president for their own party/movements just like Jeffrey.

  9. Two of Pakatan’s policy proposals announced this year are designed to strike at these two voter demographics directly. The first was a promise to write off all National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) loans and provide free university education, and the latest, a policy that will see a reduction in passenger car prices.--- be aware!!

    1. Party president Bernard Dompok said that as long as the BN government under Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak is tackling the long standing issue of illegal immigrants in Sabah, Najib “deserves” his support.

    2. “What we are doing in the Barisan Nasional is that the issue of the illegal immigrants (and this) is best addressed within the context of Barisan Nasional.

    3. “Look at the issue of illegal immigrants, it has existed a long time. We have brought it up with the (past) prime ministers and Najib is the only Prime Minister who has the gut to take the bull by the horns.

    4. “With the establishment of the royal commission of Inquiry (RCI), I think he deserves my support. Simple is that,”.

    5. But Dompok also cautioned Najib that the RCI must start immediately to solve the problem so that “we can have a new dawn for Sabah.”

    7. Scores of his supporters in the party had also left Upko. Bumburing had also launched a new entity Sabah Reform Front (SRF) last week to push forward his agenda.

    9. Bumburing had cited the perennial problem of illegal immigrants as his main reason of resigning from the Upko which is a component member of the Umno-controlled BN coalition.

    10. The alleged legalisation of illegal immigrants dates back to the 1990s and is closely linked to the era of former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. More than one million of Sabah’s population today is said to have been issued with MyKads.

    11. The issue is of grave concern to genuine Sabahans because the population may very soon overshoot theirs.

    12. Dompok said that the federal government must resolve the problem immediately to safeguard its integrity, failing which more people would support the opposition.

    13. Asked whether he was happy in the Barisan Nasional, he said the party should remain with the system of ruling coalition.

    14. “Our party is a democratic party. We discussed this issue (remaining in BN) openly in a recent meeting.

    15. “The majority voice of the members is that we want to be within the system of Barisan Nasional and carry out what we want to do in Barisan Nasional.

    16. “This is the decision of members of the supreme council of the party,” Dompok said.

    17. On the impact of Bumburing’s resignation, Dompok said that it is yet to be seen.

    18. “There is certainly some bearing on the party itself, but we will not face any operational problem. We are a party that has a lot of members.

      Delete
    19. “So what you have seen is only the reduction in membership.

      Delete
    20. “I guess they feel they want to try doing things that we are doing now in another context in another setting together with the opposition.

      Delete
    21. “I would like to stress of course that the issues of today that are brought up by the opposition are the same issues that we are addressing today.

      Delete
    22. “Of course there have been some issues that are yet to be settled. So really we are on the same page.

      Delete
    23. “We think we can pursue the issues that we have within the context of the present system of the Barisan Nasional.

      Delete
    24. “So there is a different method of how to solve the problem,” he said, adding that in a democracy, the people are free to choose any political party they want to be part of.
