Cops wants 'water villages' removed
The Semporna district police will be recommending for the removal of “water villages” in the area to the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) to improve security.
According to Berita Harian, two of such villages are Simunul and Srijaya, near Semporna town, which was the scene where six police personnel were ambushed and killed by armed intruders on March 2.
Water villages are networks of wooden villages built on stilts which dots the coastal areas throughout Sabah, normally near urban areas.
Semporna district police chief Firdaus Francis Abdullah said that in the Semporna district alone, there are 21 islands which hosts such villages.
On Thursday, former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad had also recently recommended that water villages be removed from Sabah's landscape, on grounds that such area are barely policed.
The police will also recommend that “pump boats”, a type of water craft which can travel on shallow water, be banned because it is used for smuggling and could have been used to ferry the armed intruders.
Piracy
He added that the police is considering requests by locals to build a command post about 3 nautical miles from Semporna to monitor the entry of boats, ferries and ships headed for those villages.
Meanwhile, NST reports that the Lahad Datu area had long suffered from pirates from southern Philipines. Tawi-Tawi, is only an hour away by sea.
Assaffal Alian, a resident of Kampung Tanduo - the epicentre of the ongoing armed intrusion by forces loyal to Sulu province's Sultan Jamalul Kiram III – had complained there were many discreet landing points for illegals.
Assaffal is among those 2,800 people who have been evacuated from Kampung Tanduo and several surrounding villages after armed intruders landed in the area last month.
The evacuees are currently being housed in four centres – Fajar Harapan, Cenderawasih, Embara Budi and Gemala Puta - nearby and are not allowed to leave without permission.

ReplyDeleteResidents of the many water villages off the Sabah coast should be relocated as they are exposed to threats from foreign terrorists.
ReplyDeleteFormer prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the haphazard water settlements would make it difficult for security forces to control and secure the areas.
ReplyDeleteThey have to be relocated. We have to find them land and have to distinguish between citizens, foreigners and those without identification certificates.

ReplyDeleteSix policemen were killed in an ambush by Sulu terrorists from southern Philippines at a water village in Semporna, Sabah on March 2.
Five new police stations will be set up in several districts in Sabah immediately, said Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteHe said the police stations would be built in Pulau Gaya, Kota Kinabalu; Pulau Bum-Bum and Pulau Mabul in Semporna and Tanjung Labian and Felda Sahabat in Lahad Datu.
He said the police stations were expected to begin operations on April 2.
ReplyDelete"In addition, the PDRM (Royal Malaysia Police) will look into the need to upgrade existing police stations," he said in a statement.
ReplyDeleteKhalid said initially, the police stations would operate from temporary cabins as the construction of permanent buildings would take time.
ReplyDelete"The PDRM had drawn up several specific plans to enhance the police presence in the Eastern Zone of Sabah in line with the establishment of the ESSCOM Special Security Area," he said.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, at a press conference in Semporna on Wednesday morning, said the Home Ministry had agreed to put up a new police station each on Pulau Bum Bum and Pulau Mabul.
ReplyDeleteHe said the two police stations would be operational as soon as possible to beef up the security situation in several 'hot areas' around Semporna.
ReplyDelete"I hope they can be operational as soon as possible. Otherwise, we will use temporary cabins to ensure that these stations can operate immediately.
ReplyDelete"They (police stations) are necessary because the sweeping and mopping up operations (to hunt the remnants of the Sulu terrorists) are still going on in Lahad Datu and Semporna," he said.
ReplyDelete"What we are doing is to ensure security for the people of Semporna.
ReplyDeleteWe not only guarantee safety to them, in fact by deploying more troops they will feel more confident and comfortable," he said.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, Hishammuddin confirmed that an ambush that killed six policemen in Kampung Simunul here on March 2 was linked to the Lahad Datu intrusion by Sulu terrorists.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDelete"The deadly ambush was not an isolated act, but linked to the Sulu terrorists landing in Lahad Datu on Feb 12,"
He told reporters this matter after meeting residents of Kampung Senallang Lama, near here, the scene of a terrorist beaten to death by villagers.
ReplyDeleteIn the Kampung Simunul incident, a group of policemen were attacked as they entered the water village after checking on information on the presence of an armed group at 8pm.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteOn the arrests of 97 people suspected of either allegedly abetting or directly involved with the Sulu terrorists, Hishammuddin said they were still being investigated under new acts related to terrorism. "If action is not taken now, more people will be killed," she said. She added that Ops Daulat showed the Government's seriousness in maintaining peace and security.
