Amok foreigner shot, wounded

LAHAD DATU - Police here shot and wounded a foreigner who ran amok and started attacking police at the Felcra Bhd quarters in Jalan Silam, Friday.

He is believed to have earlier killed his colleague who lived in the same quarters while he was asleep.

District Police Chief Supt Shamsudin Mat said police were alerted at about 4.15am that a man had run amok weilding a machete as well as a hammer at their quarters.

He said following the report, a team rushed to the scene and found a body lying inside the house with the suspect still holding the weapons.

"The team tried to persuade the man to surrender but failed, upon which the man started to get aggressive by throwing a hammer towards them," he said.

"The man then attacked our men using the machete, forcing them to open fire at him before apprehending him and rushing him to the hospital for treatment," he added.

According to Shamsudin, the body found inside the house was identified as the man's housemate, Markus Banu, 21. He was believed to have been hacked to death on the head while sleeping at about 3am.

"We have seized a machete believed used during the incident," he said, adding that the body has been sent to the district hospital for post mortem.

The case, he said, is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
